anser hassan is in richmond where the cause is still a mystery at this time. ser, good morning. >> reporter: fire crews and investigators are inside trying to figure out what happened this morning. let's show you live pictures of the explosion. it blew out the window blinds and glass to the front lawn. it was so strong it tore off the wall off its foundation. you can see overhead chopper 5 giving you live aerial pictures. the call came in at 2:30 a.m. neighbors called saying they heard an explosion. police and fire crews arrived on scene to this, massive damage to the entire property. people who lived inside said they thought it was an earthquake. looking at the damage, it's easy to see why. a fire captain says the area is safe but they are trying to determine the cause. >> we are thinking something to do with gas or propane because of the -- from what we see from the damage but again, there was nothing obvious. nobody hurt any type of propane leaks or gas leaks, nothing electrical we can find so far so that's why we got our investigators here now. >> reporter:

our reporter anser hassan is live at frank ogawa plaza. we will check in with him where a lot of protestors have return. but we begin with anne makovec, live at 14th and broadway where the trouble began. good morning, anne. >> reporter: good morning. it began around midnight last night after a mainly peaceful day of protesting all over oakland. at 16th and telegraph that's where protestors tried to take over a vacant building and that is where the major clash with police began. you're look at some tear gas that police ended up firing off after protestors refused to leave the area and that is when protestors started lighting fires. they had set up a barricade around this building at 16th and telegraph with garbage and wood pallets. they set it on fire to keep police away. that just inflamed the situation. pardon the pun. even more. this is where one of the more peaceful protestors tried to put the fire out with that fire extinguisher. he was stopped by some of the protestors that were bent on anarchy. they forcibly removed him from the area

anser hassan is at sproul plaza on the cal campus with more on what's happening today. anser. >> reporter: good morning, frank, grace. let's show you live pictures. we are here at sproul hall, hundreds of students already filling up the plaza. they have called for a mass convergence at noon. many are participating in teachins. some of them carrying protest signs, all in support of reforming public education. it's been peaceful but a significant police presence is keeping an eye on the crowds as they continue to grow in support of today's day of action. sociology instructor gabrielle is heeding the "occupy cal" call by teaching class outdoors. >> the message we're send something we care about public education so we're still doing education here. we still have discussion about the material that we were covering but we're not going to do business as usual. >> reporter: it isn't business as usual. several classes were held outside of sproul hall while many more were cancelled. it's all in a show of support for today's general strike and rally. even from students who don't at

but as anser hassan tells us, if all goes as planned, they could be recovering in separate beds in a few hours. anser, you just got an update, right? >> reporter: that's right. we just spoke with the doctor who is part of a 20-man team of doctors and surgeons who are attempting to separate these conjoined twins. he says they just finished separating the girls at their liver, which was their biggest concern going into the operation. it's a nine-hour procedure, six- hours to separate them, two to three hours of reconstructive surgery. he says the girls are doing fantastic and putting up a big fight. these are the behind the scenes pictures from the operating table. these two girls 2-year-old twins, have shown a very close relationship. but if all goes well, today will be the first day of their new lives. anser hassan is in berkeley now with the developing story over at sproul plaza. it's buy busy there. >> reporter: it has been but it's calm right now. let's show you live pictures at sproul plaza and uc-berkeley campus. most the students seem to be hanging out now. i spoke it a few of them this morning. there doesn't seem to be any clear plan at the moment as to what to do next. but the students are determined to stay. there's about 20 or so police on scene, as well. they are not dressed in riot gear, which suggests they are not about to raid the tents, at least not yet. students have been out here since late last night. but at 1:30 a.m., campus police arrived on scene and they ordered them to disperse by this morning. the 150 or so students were still here, held a meeting and decided they're staying. the uc campus police have called on alameda county sheriff's department for assistance but again, no one is dressed in any riot gear and i would think they would also need a larger group of officers to clear the students out of the plaza. but the school has made it

anser hassan in berkeley with more on what's happening at cal and quite a bit apparently, anser.d morning. >> reporter: good morning it's been a busy day this morning already. a handful of students this morning at sproul plaza preparing signs for today's day of action which includes a general strikes and rally against big banks. but they are also hoping to avoid a repeat of last week, when students clashed with campus police. last week 40 students were arrested after a confrontation with police. and this morning, a lawyer representing seven of those students is filing a lawsuit alleging excessive police force against unarmed students. well, today's "occupy cal" event starts at 8 a.m. with a teachin. they are planning for a 2 p.m. rally and march throughout berkeley returning to the campus around 5:00 for a general assembly as they "occupy cal" here at sproul plaza. and that's not all. they are also calling on the uc chancellor to resign. organizers of "occupy oakland" cal say the regents need to be responsible for mismanagement, cuts to the budget cut which will be much of the fo

anser hassan in woodside now to explain the next step. >> reporter: good morning. concern is pipeline 132 the same one that exploded last year in san bruno. this is the second leak found here in the bay area in just the past week. we're learning this morning is that this may be mechanical damage that caused sunday night's explosion. reports of water on the freeway came in 3:30 p.m. sunday afternoon followed by a huge explosion that blew through the side of the hill causing a mud slide that shut down highway 280 for hours. pg&e crews were testing a three- mile section of the pipeline between menlo park and woodside. they tested 120 miles to date. what they do is empty the pipeline and run water through at almost double the pressure to test for leaks. and that's when they found this latest problem. pg&e crews will be back out this morning to repair and continue working on testing the pipeline. it's expected to last a few more days. we spoke with chp. they said they doesn't expect any delays for the morning commute. back to you. >> thank you. >>> two men are wanted fo

anser hassan reports from city hall. people are being sent to monitor these polls. good morning. >> reporter: we are learning this morning that san francisco is the only jurisdiction in california where state monitors are being sent in. they are coming in after alleged allegations of voter ballot fraud by interim mayor ed lee supporters. the video surfaced last month and it shows interim mayor ed lee supporters allegedly helping elderly voters fill out their ballots. this isn't the first time san francisco elections are being monitored but it's being done this time around as this could be a historic race in san francisco. it's the first time the city mayor may be elected by rank choice voting. rank choice voters are selecting their top, second and third choice for candidate. rank choice voting has been controversial. but it's designed to help save money by preventing a runoff which can cost millions of dollars. it's also a big day for minority candidates. if elected, san francisco could put in office its first openly gay mayor, first latino or asian-american. >> at
