well, oakland police chief anthony batts is in washington, d.c. looking for mine to make oakland schools a safer place for everybody. ktvu's jade hernandez joins us live. she's got all of the details. >> reporter: good morning. anthony batts is not going to be at police headquarters today. he's in washington, d.c. on a mission. he's collaborating with oakland unified school district superintendent tony smith to come up with a way to strengthen bonds and stuneds. the police department -- bonds and students. the police department would place six police officers at four schools. this would help deter crime and help to build better r elationships with students on the verge of joining a gang or straying from school. today, chief batts is in d.c. lobbying for funding which needs 6 million in funding. we attended a press conference on monday, where the chief discussed kaiser's $10 million grant. >> the middle schools are l ooking to become our ground zero to make an impact in community policing in the city of oakland. >> reporter: this program would not

anthony batts is trying to get get federal money to help make oakland's schools teacher. oakland police officers tracked down a truant high school student after he jumped in this truck. for this very reason, anthony batts says the department needs to focus on students at the middle school level before they begin to get in trouble. the chief spoke about the need. >> we are looking to make an impact on the community policing with the schools. >> reporter: they want to place six polices each at four different middle schools, including this school. two of the officers would be a signedded to the "our kids" or the "okay program." >> schools are very vulnerable at this age. that's the age they decide whether they are gonna be in a gang or resort to violence. >> reporter: back home, parents and students at westlake middle school are proposal. westlake is another school benefiting. >> that's good. he we need the protection for the people. >> people get in trouble, yeah. >> reporter: this sixth grader sees the need for the police officers. it's up to lawmakers to see these police

just yesterday oakland police chief anthony batts asked the fbi to join the investigation into the shooting of jones. >> the primary reason is public trust. and when you have an officer- involved shooting in a community is a little concerned, we need to be open and transparent. >> reporter: the sentencing of johannes mehserle in the shooting of oscar grant on a bart platform will also be up for discussion and on today's agenda. as for oakland police, there have been five officer-involved shootings so far this year, three of them faithta . the naacp sake after this morning's hearing it hopes to produce a report with some concrete recommendations to law enforcement and the community as to how to move forward here in oakland. this hearing here at the jack london aquatic center begins this morning at 9:30. >>> a man testified yesterday that dna evidence from four suspects in a richmond high school rape case was found on the victim's body or at the scene on the richmond high school campus. another witness told the court the 16-year-old victim suffered numerous injuries including blaine swelling.
