joining me now in sulfa county 's deputy police commissioner, anthony carter. commissioner, thank you for joining us. this has been captivating long island and the nation for quite some time. but this is the gilgo for, but only three were charged, three different women have actually been found right now. so let me begin with that fourth woman, maureen burns. is there a connection from heuermann to her death yet? >> well, right now, our task force, in conjunction with all of our law enforcement partners, are actively investigating whether or not our defendant is a part of more victims. >> why do you think there might be more victims? >> well, at this juncture, as i said, we have come a very long way in the investigation. at this juncture we feel that, even though we have come a long way, and we still have a very long way to go. at this point, as to where we are, we just do not know. but rest shirt we're going to find out. >> let's talk about what you do know so far. i won the big questions, i don't know if it is out of fear, or trying to get into the mind of an

pressing forward according to the suffolk county police department, the deputy commissioner, anthony carterhad the opportunity to speak to. he said they never slowed down. they kept information from the public on purpose. they knew heuermann according to them was monitoring for headlines and they feared that at any hint of a development, that they could potentially lose him. so that's why, not only because of that, that's when investigators moved in. i had the opportunity to speak to suffolk county district attorney ray tyranny. and i asked him exactly what they believe their suspect may have been doing over the last decade or so. >> the murders were discovered between 2007 and 2010. the bodies were discovered in 2010. once in march of 2022, when we focused on him, there was no evidence of any, other than patronizing prostitutes, any criminal activity. certainly the pattern of life that we saw was concerning. >> so that is key according to the district attorney, though they did not believe that he was already about to potentially carry out another murder. according to the allegations, they

>> so in the last hour i actually had an opportunity to speak by phone to anthony carter, deputy commissionerolk county police department, which was instrumental in the arrest that played out a thursday. carter telling me that his agency really never gave up hope that they would arrive at this crucial moment, that they would have an arrest, that despite the lack of information that was being shared in the public eye, his agency was continuing to move forward, never lost momentum. and back to that last point, fred, the whole lack of information in the public arena, when you hear from the district attorney, who i also had an opportunity to speak to, he says that was done on purpose. they were confident that rex heuermann was closely monitoring for headlines, for developments in this investigation, that they feared that if any information would actually leak that he could try to get away, and that is why on thursday at about 5:00 the district attorney issued that order for detectives to move in and make that arrest on a manhattan sidewalk. >> so then you also have to worry about leaks because we

suffolk county deputy chief commissioner anthony carter said, quote, it's the worst case i've ever seenscribed heuermann as a, quote, demon. this investigation is far from over, you say? >> you know, it may just be beginning because, as you see, charges being brought in three of the murders, charges may be coming in a fourth. there are a number of roads that they're going to have to travel down here, which is number one, can they connect with the physical evidence and forensics that they get out of that house, that they get out of that storage area, that they get out of other locations that they may search. this suspect who other bodies among the almost ten that could fit into this pattern. the second thing is does an alleged serial killer stop killing when police find, you know, his burial ground, or does he keep going with a change of m.o.? here's a guy who has a timeshare in las vegas, access to hunting cabins upstate, relatives that he visits down south. so what they're going to be looking at is what is -- what is his pattern of life? where has he been and have people disappeared or
