i'm anthony mason. we begin tonight with the worst single blow to u.s. forces since the war in afghanistan began nearly 10 years ago. a helicopter crash has killed 30 americans, and early indications are that the taliban is to blame. elizabeth palmer in london has the latest. >> reporter: the chinook helicopter came down in wardak province just southwest of kabul. of the 30 americans aboard, 22 were members of the special operations navy seal team six, the same unit that killed osama bin laden. the other eight were army and air force personnel. a civilian translator, seven afghan commandos, and a specially trained dog also died. the crash site has now been cordoned off, about the taliban claim they shot down the chinook early this morning just as it was taking off after a raid on their fighters. u.s. military sources say it was called in as backup by another unit, which had run into trouble. local witnesses report the chinook was hit with a rocket- propelled grenade, a popular weapon among the taliban because it's light and cheap, although it's usually i

anthony mason has more on what could happen if they do. >> reporter: it may not be enough. the debt ceiling deal calls for more than $2 trillion in spending cuts. but the agencies that grade america's debt want more. standard & poor's called for $4 trillion in cuts in its july report. otherwise the rating agency's president told congress last week, our $14 trillion debt will continue to rise. >> and the growth rate of the debt burden is something that does need to be addressed for us to continue to assess the credit worthiness of the sovereign commercial debt at aaa levels. >> reporter: the united states credit rating has never fallen below aaa. and it would be an embarrassment, says economist michael darda. >> but it's hard to see how the rating agencies are going to tell bond investors anything that they don't already know. >> reporter: investors have not been scared away yet. they're still buying up u.s. treasury bills. but a downgrade could drive up interest rates, and the cost of borrowing, affecting everything from auto loans to mortgage rates. >> we definitely would

senior business correspondent anthony mason is in illinois where he sat down with mr. obama this afternoon for the cbs news program "sunday morning." anthony. >> reporter: scott, the president said he was happy to be out of washington and he looked it. he insisted that he's on a listening tour, not on a campaign swing. but in the three-day bus trip across minnesota, iowa, and illinois-- three states he carried in the last election-- the president has been given an ear full about the economy. i asked him today about the recent violent swings in the stock market and what message he thinks the markets are sending. >> what i think the markets were reacting to is the fact that the economy has not grown as quick as it needs to. there have been a lot of headwinds-- the european debt crisis, japan, high gas prices from the arab spring-- and what a lot of folks are worried about is that the recovery that we have been on is stalling or not moving as quickly as it needs to. >> reporter: to you think we're in danger of another recession? >> i don't think we're in danger of another

anthony mason has more about what has investors so worried. >> reporter: scott, the market had to climb out of a 160-point hole to barely escape its ninth straight losing session. that would have been the longest losing streak since 1978. more than a trillion dollars in stock value has been wiped out in less than two weeks. it was another volatile day on wall street as veteran traders like ted weissenberg see increasing signs the economy is faltering. >> and so investors are simply saying, "you know what, i don't have a lot of confidence in what this country is doing, and economically, and i don't want the risk." >> reporter: the white house insists the economy is not in danger of sliding backwards. >> we do not believe that there is a threat there of a double- dip recession. >> reporter: put butt in 401(k) plans over the past week, 96% of all trades, or more than $2 billion worth, have been out of stocks and into the safety of bonds. in new york, accountant mel laczar met with his financial planner but decided not to move his money. >> i'm upset, i'm distressed, but i really am praying

first, senior business correspondent anthony mason on the floor of the new york stock exchange. >> reporter: scot, the dow is again below 11,000. of the 30 stocks in that benchmark index, only one, wal- mart, was actually up today. to give you an idea of how volatile this market has become, today's 419-point drop is actually only the 4th biggest of the month. worries about this market just won't go away. analysts at morgan stanley put out a report today saying the u.s. and europe are hovering dangerously close to another recession. all that uncertainty is driving even ordinary investors to the exits, in the week after the s&p downgrade of the u.s. credit rating, $30 billion was pulled out of stock mutual funds. that's the biggest exodus since january of 2008. in the meantime, money continues to pour into gold, which hit another record high today, scott, of $1,822 an ounce. >> pelley: anthony, did anything else worry the market today? >> reporter: there was one other thing, one of the numbers that economists look at closely, the philly-fed manufacturing number which dropped into negative ter

casey anthony's lawyers, jose baez and cheney mason defending her. judge belvin perry deciding whether anthony should serve one year probation for check fraud. we're looking at live pictures. the defense team said the 25-year-old served her probation while in jail during the murder trial where she was acquitted of killing her 2-year-old daughter, caylee. you can see anthony's lawyers on the left hand side. judge perry says it's not clear-cut. he's been reading other cases to check for a precedent in this case. let's listen for just a second. >> someone to serve probation while in custody. it undermines the purpose of community supervision. the point of probation is to assist probationers reassimilate back into the community while being properly supervised and monitored. this supervision was supervision in name only. ms. anthony was required to do nothing since she was in pc at the time, other than seeing her attorneys from time to time. her only obligation was not to attack anybody or try to escape, and she would have successfully completed this proba

did casey anthony understand she was on probation while she was in jail? cheney masons interviewed but doesn't appear any probation officer went to vis visit her. there were conditions, i find this comical, stay away from all people involved in crime while she's in jail. that's already a violation. i don't know whether she paid her $20 a month for probation supervision fee. as far as i know she didn't hold down a job which is a condition of probation. it was simply a clerical error in terms of putting the word "concurrent" in there, in the sentence before it said she shall serve it upon release. you can't have it both ways but raises the legal question, should she get off on the technicality. >> in terms of the filing made, how does this figure in? >> two issues in the emergency motion that cheney mason filed yesterday, number one, they do not like judge strickland. they talk about his unbridled prejudice, want him removed from this because earl whier this week judge strickland amended the order to clarify what his intent was, the intent was she would start her probati

judge perry back on the stand, casey anthony's attorneys jose baez and cheney mason, they were there he prosecutor, linda drane burdick and frank george. but unlike in the murder trial, this time the state agrees with casey anthony's attorneys. they do not believe casey anthony should now have to serve a year's probation. this has nothing to do with the murder trial. this all goes back to that 31-daytime period back in the summer of 2008 when casey anthony did not report to anybody that caylee was missing or, as she told investigators back then, that "zanny" the nanny had kidnapped her. at the time casey anthony was partying it up in hot body contests, drinking, clubbing, having fun and on a shopping spree. captured on several surveillance videotapes buying things for herself with bogus checks stolen from her best friend at the time who was out of town and letting her use her vehicle. well, for that in june of 2010 casey anthony did plead guilty of six counts of check fraud. the judge at the time, judge stan strickland, ordered her to serve 412 days in jail. she did that all while awa

anthony awakes to a whole new courtroom drama. this one pitting her lawyers against the judge originally in her murder case who was thrown off. before he spoke a word, chaney masonis mood flipping off a passing driver. he gave the press the same treatment the day of casey anthony's s quittal. >>>>ight now we're filing one motion. >> reporter: mason didn't say much as he made his way to the courthouse to fight the judge's order for casey to come back to orlando to serve probation for writing bad checks. >> set aside and vacate that stupid order. >> reporter: he argued anthony already did serve probation while she was incarcerated. and he wants this judge off the case, accusing him of being biased. and pointed to his appearance and reaction to the verdict on the tabloid entertainment program "nancy grace." >> i'm just kind of shocked at the result and i really don't know what to say beyond that. >> reporter: nancy grace devoted more air time to this case than anyone. in a twist, the defense team is trying to use her to keep casey out of the legal system, all because that judge told her this -- >> i just never have seen one like this and the magnitude of it sort of

mason. we have got judge perry back on the bench, but in the courtroom you've got jose baez, casey anthony's attorney, and the prosecutors, linda drane burdick and her assistant, they're all together here and believe that since casey anthony was in jail denied bond, simply waiting for the pending murder trial, that year of probation, basically, has been accounted for, and the department of corrections also thought so. now, the judge, judge strickland, verbally said back in january of 2010 he wanted her to do a year's probation after she walks out of jail. however, he didn't write it down on the documents exactly that way, and that's what judge perry has to weigh, which has ultimate precedence here; his verbal opinion or the written word? alisyn: all right, phil. we'll be watching, let us know what happens. bill two days ago we thought we would see her back in that courtroom. alisyn: that was a possibility. bill: yes. then, not now. a shocking story that was not supposed to go this way. a comment on a woman's parenting turns into a gunfight, and you have to see how this thing plays out. alisy
