good evening, i'm anthony mason. millions of americans endured yet another day of blistering heat, temperatures in the 90s and even the 100s covered much of the country today. at least 30 people have died from the heat, which the c.d.c. says routinely kills more people than all other weather events combined. elaine quijano is braving the heat for us here in new york. >> reporter: good evening, anthony. one doctor told us today normally in heat waves it's the elderly and the very young who are especially vulnerable. but she said a combination of factors now means everyone is at risk. louisville, kentucky was among the hottest spots in the country today. the murkry there climbed to 108 degrees. >> it's a little bit -- i'm really glad there's air conditioning. >> reporter: triple digits spread across the midwest, northeast and mid atlantic. dr. michelle carter of howard university medical center in d.c. recommends people stay inside air conditioned buildings during heat waves like this one. she says the high humidity pr

. >> pelley: anthony mason on where the history of the reflution-- revolution will spin the future. captioning sponsored by cbs this is the "cbs evening news" with scott pelley. james holmes heard charges today that could cost him his life if he is convicted in the colorado theatre massacre. prosecutors presented well over 100 charges in court today. 12 counts of premeditated murder. one for each of the people who died. and 12 counts of murder with extreme indifference to human life, again one for each of the dead. those charges carry the death penalty. holmes is also charged with 116 counts of attempted murder. two counts for each of the people prosecutors say were injured, two counts each because the prosecutors haven't decided which law they will use at trial. some victims and some relative-- relatives were in the courtroom in centennial colorado and so was john blackstone. john, what did you see? >> scott, well, james holmes still has orange hair and he looked as if he hasn't shaved since he was arrested. but in court today he showed no emotion. and he stared up at the ceiling.

. >> mason: good evening, scott is off, i'm anthony mason. the recession officially ended three years ago but today's jobs report is more proof the recovery is painfully slow. the june unemployment rate was 8.2%-- unchanged from may but employers added just 80,000 jobs. that's three straight months of disappointing job creation after a four-month stretch where growth was in the hundreds of thousands. it was the main issue today on the presidential campaign trail we have three reports beginning with rebecca jarvis. rebecca, those 80,000 jobs just aren't enough, are they? >> reporter: they are not, anthony. our economy needs to add at least 125,000 new jobs every month just to keep up with population growth. at this pace it could take four more years for the u.s. job market to fully recovery from the great recession. how does it feel to look at a project like this that is thriving now? >> it's exciting. it's a relief. it's thrilling. we're happy to be part of it. >> reporter: mark dinapoli is general manager at the suffolk construction company

i'm anthony mason. the sun is showing no mercy. the mercury soared again today in the central and eastern united states, with temperatures in the 90s and over 100. the weather service put out a heat warning for much of the region, including illinois. the temperature in chicago hit 103, breaking a record that had stood for more than a century. and the heat wave may be aggravating a crime wave. there were 22 more shootings in chicago overnight, five of them deadly. so far this year, the city has cid 270 homicides. dean reynolds has more now about crime in the heat of the night. >> reporter: the victims of chicago's increasingly bloody summer are trapped now between a plague of gangland violence and the onset of triple-digit heat. ten-year-old kitanna peterson was out late tuesday night on the far west side playing in a ntre hydrant when she was shot. a stray bullet went through her anist and abdomen. >> you know what kind of man do that? a fool. he'll be caught. >> reporter: many of the nearly two dozen wounded in the past 24 hours w
