i'm anthony mason. this is our western edition. we begin with a president on the defensive. disputed accounts of white house conversations, demands for recordings-- if there are any-- and accusations of obstruction of justice. it may sound like a page out of history, but it happened today after president trump took the extraordinary step of tweeting a warning to former f.b.i. director james comey. comey, the man he fired three days ago. we begin with justice correspondent jeff pegues. >> reporter: the president sent the tweet shortly before 8:30 this morning: this morning: it was a response to what comey says happened at a dinner with t esident trump at the white house on january 27, just one why after the white house was informed former national y thrity adviser michael flynn had been compromised by the russians. e mey told associates that at lonner, the president asked if st would pledge his loyalty. comey declined, instead telling the president he would "always be honest." the president asked two more times, and comey refused again. the third time, mr. trump asked for "ho

i'm anthony mason. president trump took time out from his busy schedule as leader of the free world today to fire off a tweet to his longtime nemesis, comedian rosie o'donnell. he said, "we finally agree on something." that was a response to her tweet nearly five months ago calling for james comey to be fired. today, the administration rewrote the story it was telling just yesterday of how and when the president decided to dismiss the director of the f.b.i. here's major garrett at the white house. >> he's a showboat. he's a grandstander. the f.b.i. has been in turmoil. you know that. i know that. everybody knows that. >> reporter: president trump said today he was going to fire james comey no matter what advice he received from attorney attorney general rod rosenstein. >> i was going to fire comey. there's

i'm anthony mason. president trump has left on his first overseas trip but he cannot escape the controversies engulfing his administration. just as air force one flew off, a new report raised questions about mr. trump's motive for firing f.b.i. director james comey. jeff pegues begins our coverage. >> reporter: it was a move that the president said relieved great pressure on him. that's what president trump told russian foreign minister sergey lavrov and ambassador sergey kislyak. according to the "new york times," the comments were made during the may 10 oval office meeting. "i just fired the head of the f.b.i. he was crazy, a real nut job," the report quotes mr. trump as saying in the official white house account of the meeting. "i faced great pressure because of russia. that's taken off." white house press secretary sean spicer did not deny the comments but in a statement said "by grand standing and polit sizing the investigation into russia's actions, james comey created unnecessary pressure on our
