i'm anthony mason.ricane maria, the most powerful storm to hit puerto rico in more than 80 years has knocked out power to the entire island of nearly 3.5 million people. maria made landfall today as a category 4 and touched off catastrophic flooding. the storm is moving away from puerto rico tonight, toward the dominican republic, and tomorrow, the bahamas. david begnaud is in san juan. >> reporter: maria's blinding rain and vicious 155-mile-per-hour winds tore across this island just before 7:00 a.m. it ripped aluminum roofs off billions like they were soda can tops. it turned streets into rivers and debris into missiles. puerto rico's governor is telling people to stay calm, but he's warning that the island is on the verge of losing communication. in one neighborhood, 80% of the homes are destroyed, and the entire island of puerto rico is wiewwithout power. maria already left a trail of destruction on the islands of dominica and st. croix, both in the direct path of the storm. in puerto rico, floodwat

i'm anthony mason. and this is our western edition. atlantic ocean tonight is an alphabet soup of storms-- j, l, and m. hurricane jose, tropical depression lee, and hurricane maria. maria is the one posing the biggest threat. a category 4 hurricane, it's aiming for caribbean islands that took a beating earlier this month from hurricane irma. eric fisher is chief meteorologist at our cbs station wbz. how is it looking, eric? >> reporter: we'll start with the storm we've been tracking for two weeks, which is jose. it looks like a nor'easter. it's starting to lose some of the tropical characteristics. the track keeps it just off shore, but this will produce a lot of surf, rip current risk, and some strong winds near the coastline, not a worst-case storm here. the storm that has gone under rapid intensification these last 24 hours is maria. it was a tropical storm yesterday afternoon. now it's a category 4 hurricane, and we can look right in that eye. it cleared out this afternoon, a pinhole eye that is bearing down in dominica. that eye l

"move your hand," the rescuer says. "can you hear me? there you are." the woman, a human resources worker, was at her office when the earthquake struck tuesday. "we'll get to you," he says. let's go back to anthony mason in new york. >> mason: thanks, jeff. predicting damage from a hurricane is a guessing game, of course. a lot depends on which part of the storm hits land. lonnie quinn, chief weathercaster at our cbs station in new york is here to explain. lonnie. >> reporter: you bet, anthony. i have to tell you, first and foremost, every inch of a hurricane can be different and every hurricane is different so what i want to do is take a look specifically at irma, because the bulk of this storm-- it's enormous-- the bulk of it has tropical storm force winds. they stretch out from the eye 210 miles on either side of the eye. inside of this you'll find a band of hurricane-force winds, and this is where those winds are sustained above 74 miles per hour. this band extends 70 miles from the eye. and then outside of the eye itself, the eye is actually where you find nice, peaceful air. but outside of the eye is the eyewall, and this is where you find the strongest winds that irma has to offer, her 155-mile- per-hour winds are confined to an a

i'm anthony mason. president trump declared an emergency today in florida, puerto rico, and the u.s. virgin islands, all threatened by the most powerful atlantic hurricane ever seen. irma, a category five, has already turned deadly on the islands of the caribbean. the national hurricane center says chances have grown for a direct hit on florida, possibly as soon as the weekend. we have team of correspondents covering the storm. first tony dokoupil in puerto rico. >> reporter: this wall of wind and rain is only getting worse tonight as hundreds of puerto ricans are already in shelters and more than 200 tourists in this hotel have been evacuated out of their rooms and into a ballroom where they're expecting a very long night in the storm. residents were warned to brace for the worst as the strongest winds in a century lashed puerto rico. irma has already left plenty of evidence of its record-setting strength, and wind gusts topped 200mph, knocking out power as buildings collapsed and debris flew. st. mart

anthony mason is in new york. tonight, it's a race to outrun irma, the most powerful hurricane ever recorded in the atlantic. the fury of this category 5 storm was seen in the caribbean where at least ten people were killed when irma tore through there. here in florida, more than a million live in mandatory evacuation zones, and folks along the georgia coast have also been ordered to leave. >> mason: tonight, irma should pass over turks and caicos on its way to florida by sunday morning. sustained winds are 175 miles an hour. video from the space station shows irma's size. hurricane-force winds extend 70 miles from its center. we want to check in with lonnie quinn, chief weathercaster at our new york station wcbs. lonnie, the forecast is changing. >> it is. the new information pushes things a little bit more to the west, and we talk about this being an ominous turn. well, let's get right to it. we haven't actually begun the turn yet. but there is a picture of irma. it's enormous. you could fit texas inside of that
