anthony reynolds is back with us on the phone. witness to the scene. een talking during our special report. but if you don't mind, i'd like to ask you to recap what you witnessed at around 1:00 this morning. >> yeah. at 1:00, about 1:05 as i'm walking out of the bar, it was still a fun time. there was a crowd outside. it was still a long line of people trying to get into the bar. once i walked to the end of the line of people going into the club, you could look across the street and see there was another line at a food cart and right there is where you see the man come from over there by the cart and he just opened fire as we we're walking. i'm in front of my friend, i hear one begun shochlt we're thinking it's a sound. we realize it's gunfire. then it turned into more rapid fire and so my friend was behind me. i started running. i started running, telling my friend to come on. when i tell him to come on, i see people in the line actually start to fall, like they were getting hit with the bullets. that's when you see the whole crowd of like people just

he was just steps away from entering a popular bar-- ned peppers-- in district.s oregon anthony reynolds had just left the bar as the shooting began. >> i know it's gunfi i'm looking around and i'm like, okay what's going on? but then what you hear right after that is repeated, like, shots. high power shots like boom-boom- boom-boom-boom. so we just start really running. i'm grabbing my cousin, we running. and i just start yelling at the people in front of me, like, "that's a mass shooter, that's a mass shooter!" >> reporter: at one point, heee was just tenaway from the shooter. reporter: the shooter's own sister is among the dead. s till, the motive is unclear. dayton mor nan whaley said the quick response by dayton police prevented scores more from dying. >> i'm completely grateful forda thon police department-- six police oicers, five of whom have only been on this force r three years, ran toward the shooter heroically, not with the kind of weapon heth had-- but he weapons we've given to them to stop this, and they did that in 24 seconds. >> reporter: the shooter wore full body armor

anthony reynolds was a witness to last night's shooting and joins us now. thony, tell us what you saw last night. >> hectic. it was chaotic. it was scary. i kind of ran and tried to yell to as many people and warn them we had a shooter going on, as possible. >> where were you when you first understood that something was going on? i had just left the bar and was in the line going down to the club. >> what did you see? >> as we get toward the end of the line, you hear it. you don't see anything first. we hear the gunshot. and as we looking around, to see what's going on, you hear another gunshot. that's when you -- after that, you hear the rapid fire. that's when we realized what was going on. i had people -- i had my cousin with me. when i turned around, that's how i was able to see the people in the line get shot. you could see those people falling. that's when we, you know, hauled it out of there, and was yelling to people that it was a mass shooter. >> have you ever experienced that before? >> no. usually no problems and it's a safe place. >> what does tha

. >> anthony reynolds was there yourt si outside the bar in dayton. anthony, good morning, i know this is a difficult morning for you. i appreciate you taking the time to explain to us what happened. i understand you left the bar a little after 1:00 in the morning. what happened from there? >> yes, 1:05 a.m. i was leaving. i knew the exact time because i was looking at my phone, i had to be to work at 6:00 a.m. me and my cousin were waiting to get out and there were still a long line to get into the jub. lively night on saturdays. and by the time we got to the end. line, which is near the corner, you heard one gunshot, you heard boom. so we're looking around, didn't know what it was. didn't sound like a familiar sound. the building made it echo off and then after that complete rapid fire just one minute. >> anthony, you were inside the club. was there any kind of confrontation? did you see anything happen before all of this took place over the course of the night? >> no. i had been in there since 11:00. nothing was happening at all. it was a perfectly

reynolds has been following this story. dean, are investigators nany closer to learning a motive here? >> reporter: they are not, anthony. they have not yet established a motive, but they do believe the gunman acted alone. his own sister was among the victims, but investigators remain divided on whether he intentionally targeted her. two hours before beginning his violent rampage, 24-year-old conner betts, his sister and a friend are seen on surveillance video seemingly headed for a night of barhopping. their first stop, a place called blind bob's. just after midnight, betts crosses the street and heads to another bar, separating from his sister and friend. at 12:42, wearing a t-shirt and shorts, he heads back to the car and reemerges in a hoodie, body armor and backpack, weighted by his weapon and ammunition. minutes later at 1:05 a.m., the shooting begins. >> shots fired! shots fired! >> reporter: the crowd on the patio of a bar scatters. the gunfire lasts for 32 seconds before police stop it. >> we ever a number of people shot. >> reporter: betts' sister was shot to death and his friend was wounded. text messages reve
