inside this hospital anthony valerio is still fighting for his life. he still remains in critical condition at this hour. our news crews were there as this fire broke out yesterday morning around 10:45. it was in san francisco's diamond heights neighborhood. it only took a few seconds for this to quickly become an inferno. the flames actually moved so fast, the three firefighters were hurt in what is being called a flashover, heat so intense that it burns at 1100 degrees. it moved too quickly to save the life of lieutenant vincent perez, a 21-year veteran of san francisco fire. a former marine and a previous alameda county sheriff's deputy. with a final salute, his fellow firefighters said good-bye to him as his body was removed from san francisco general. witnesses say it was a chaotic scene when this fire first broke out. >> i noticed three girls went out of the house and there was a little smoke coming out of the garage and i said what's going on? and they were calling 911 at that moment and said there is a fire started downstairs. so i started to c

gathered here today, to mourn the loss of lieutenant vincent perez and firefighter paramedic anthony valerio. none of us can forget what happened last thursday, june 2nd, 2011. it's 10:45 a.m. 8155 came in. we all know the outcome. if i had the ability to change the outcome, i would have done it in a heartbeat, but unfortunately, that is not the case. there are no words that can describe the pain, anger and sorrow that we're feeling. and nor were there words to describe the sacrifice made by vincent tony. mrs. frank and mrs. valerio, sisters jack i can, donna, marina and laura, brothers mark and kevin, and to our san francisco fire department family. we have lost two sons, two brothers, uncles, cousins, friends, and public servants. vince and tony gave their lives in a pursuit of saving lives. their death reminds each and every one of us with the inherent risk associated with being a firefighter. most of us in uniform place our emphasis and focus on protecting and serving others. we try to downplay the risks to our friends and families and sometimes we try and downplay it even to ourselves.
