in wake county, anthony wilson. john: too many wrecks to show you but we are showing you a number of them. gloria? >> we have already driven past several rex out here -- wrecks out here. you can see that vehicle there. the vehicle hit the center divider. this is a one-person accident. you can see that vehicle totally damaged. there have been no major injuries on many of these occasions with these accidents. in wake county there have been at least 45 accident this morning alone. most of these, minor accidents, we don't like to see any accidents but it is wonderful that nobody has gotten seriously injured. the raleigh police department is can. especially, try to stay off the where we are getting many of those accidents. our camera in front of us, our front camera here, you can see traffic is moving at this time. we have seen many backups particularly on 495 heading eastbound and westbound. there was a portion their closed. in the last hour, they have reopened that portion of the road, however there are still backups.

anthony wilson is live at the unc system's building with details. anthony: a small group came here this morning comprised in part of some students and faculty members. they did not get what they came here for, those documents you just mentioned related to the hiring of spelling, the former secretary of education for the bush administration. he entered the building requesting contact with the unc board of governor general counsel. a written request for all records related to the firing of tom ross and the hiring of spelling. they criticized her background and raised questions about her plan to the unc system's we did have some audio we wanted hear what the people are saying about spellings. we will have that later in this newscast. they wanted those documents. they don't expect to get them for the fourth of march, the day she will be sworn in. they did say if they do not have those documents by that time they may go to court for them. more on this, coming up in this newscast. anthony wilson, eyewitness news. barbara: a developing story and raleigh. th

anthony wilson is live with how police were able to tie him to the 1996 murder. anthony: good morning, barbara. they charged him twice. the first time when he was an n.c. state student. they said he killed her because she refused to have an abortion but that was dropped. then they checked key evidence and charged him again in 2014. that is when raleigh and charlotte mecklinburg police arrested him in cornelius after she was a 20-year-old shaw university student. detectives investigated and determined she was killed on may 17, 1996. construction workers found her remains off u.s. one near catrell in march of 1997. he was originally charged then it was dismissed but he was indicted after additional tests were performed on earlier evidence. jury selection begins today and we will keep you updated on twitter, abc11 mental app and on abc11.com. live outside the wake county justice center anthony wilson, abc 11 eyewitness news. john: thank you, anthony. also at wake county justice center closing arguments expected to start in traveon smith's sentencing hearing. a jury c

anthony wilson is at wake county detention center where they are being held with more on how police tracked them down. anthony: it is howard earl and terrell mclamb both charged with burglary, armed robbery and kidnapping awaiting the court appearance. they are two of the six accused by authorities of involvement in a cary home invasion. three women who live there say some of them forced their way inside just before 5:00 monday morning and demanded money. one woman tried to call for help. >> i picked up the phone next to me and i'm trying to dial 911 but by that point my door is open and he's like give me your phone and they asked where is anthony: they got away with cash and the cell phone. police managed to track down the suspects at the la quinta inn. investigator investigators are not ruling out the possibility that this is related to a string of robberies targeting asian business owners. the women were not hurt. one suspect we learned is a juvenile. no word on pending charges against the remaining four suspects. we expect to learn more during the court appearance today. outside wake co

anthony wilson has the latest on the investigation and how that little boy is doing. anthony: police tell us several shots were fired from a dark sedan tuesday afternoon. they pearced the wall of a home and sent the toddler to a hospital. >> this is a quiet neighborhood and i don't know. i don't understand it. i really don't know what happened. anthony: a drive-by shooting disturbed the quiet when bullets left holes in this home that doubles acetate items tatum's christian child. there were five young children. >> all she could do is grab the kids and hit the floor. unfortunately one of the babies was shot in the leg. one was trying to get away from the other and the other had ammunition. anthony: the boy shot and injured and rushed to duke hospital. nabs expect it is -- neighbors expect it is gang. for shooting a life. there isn't. anthony: the child is expected to recover. there's a reward offered for information that leads to an arrest. call crime stoppers if you know anything about what happened there or if you know anything about the gunman the we are live outside

live in durham, anthony wilson, eyewitness news. barbara: pretrial motions are mother inside her apartment in north hills. reporter: a lot of these pretrial motions, at least a lot of the talk was about one motion in this case involving what is expected to be a key witness. on the night of the murder, this woman says she was with the two men accused of killing melissa huggins jones. but exactly what she will say is unclear. her statements to police have changed over time. according to court documents and information provided by investigators, the three had been breaking into cars at the complex. in her most recent interview, she said anthony and smith went into the apartment of melissa huggins jones. huggins jones was found dead by her eight-year-old daughter the next morning. death penalty and was sentenced to life without parole. smith decided to risk a death penalty trial to prove he is not guilty. >> the last statements we have were from 2015 in which she said ronald anthony told her she was the one -- he was the one that did al

anthony wilson is live at the wake county detention center where they are being held. able to track them down. anthony: with the help of the cell phone. it is hourld earl jr. and terrell mclamb both charged with burglary, armed robbery and kidnapping. they are awaiting today's court appearance. they are two of the six people accused by authorities of involvement in a cary home invasion. three women who live there say some of the men forced their way inside just before 5:00 monday morning and demand eded money. one tried to call for help. >> my cell phone was next to me and i'm trying to dial 911 but by that point my door is open and he is give me your phone and then they asked for cash. anthony: they got away with cash and the cell phone. they managed to track down the suspects at the la quinta pb thanks to the phone. investigators are not rule outing the possibility this is targeting asian business owners. the women inside that home much not hurt. one suspect we are told is a juvenile. no word on pending charges against the remaining four suspects but we expect to lear

anthony wilson is there. what can you tell us about what you are seeing? anthony: i'm seeing darkness except for the parts lit up by our headlights. we will give you an idea of how dark it is. we will look at the rear camera in breaking news one. you see the reflection. down at the other end those are traffic lights that are working. compare that with the view from the front. nothing. just what is lit up by our headlights. this is one area that still has no power. we are talking about chapel hill and morehead. morehead and 10th. all the way to lakewood still no power. about 1,200 customers in the dark we are told. it should be restored, according to the outage map, by 8:30. but if you are driving through here here, this is part of your commute please be careful because there are no traffic signals at some of the intersections. you can see it is very dark here and add the rain and you have potentially hazardous conditions. so, please keep your eyes open and driver slowly and we will -- drive slowly and we will let you know when the power comes back on and if
