joining us now, nbc news correspondent antonia hilton. she is there in lewiston, maine, for us. antonia, great to see you. what's the very latest on the manhunt? >> reporter: good morning, jonathan. well, for the second night in a row now, residents in this part of maine have been hunkered down at home living with immense shock and fear. and because robert card is still on the run, people tell me it is hard forhem to move forward with the grieving process. we are still waiting for more informatioabout many of the victims, many of them up to 18 haven't been identified positively by police yet we've been told in part because of just the level of damage and the terror this kind of weaponry unleashed at the bar and restaurant and bowling alley that night. and we're also learning more through nbc news sources about the state of robert card's mental health that evening. some of our colleagues were able to reach katie card, his sister-in-law, and had a conversation with her in which she told nbc news that he was hearing voices and she described his beliefs as manic. she declined to comm

at this hour yesterday my colleague antonia hilton was explaining that because of the gruesome, hideousy the suspect in the shooting identifying some of the victims was a gruesome and lengthy process. these are the parts of the story that really hard to talk about that i question how much of these parts of it we should cover. but some of the inertia of doing nothing is wrapped up in the intublt to hold a mirror up to ourselves as a country. >> the perpetrator of these things mentally disturbed which is often the case, it makes perfect sense to them in their conviction about it. sort of like the moon is made of green cheese and there was hay in the barn so i had to go to the town to shoot these people. it makes no sense if you're in your right mind but makes perfect sense in their minds. there's a microcosm of this mass shooting wenomnen we now see going on and on for years and years where almost we can get to two a day by the end of this year at the rate we're going. and on one level, that makes no sense. there's no rational way in which you can say i understand why this is happening or

let's bring in nbc news correspondent antonia hilton. she joins us live from houston.eople throughout the state of maine have been hunkered down at home. businesses closed, schools out for the second day in a row, and when i talked to residents, they described a combination of extreme shock and excruciating grief here. in part, because it's hard to really pick up the pieces to grieve together when you're on lockdown at home. people are turning out their lights. at night, fearful that he might be out there in the woods looking for another target, a home to come and visit. they have been locking up their barns, locking up their cars, and so the pain here is immense. i had a conversation with one resident yesterday who was actually here at the medical center. this is the primary center where victims have been treated. three people are still in critical condition. behind me here, three people passed away here, and this resident, a woman named cynthia hunter was outside the emergency room watching as -- minutes after 7:00 p.m., after these shootings had unfolded, people sta
