antonia hylton, what are we hearing from trump's team? >> well, the remarks today from president trump have been a bit contradictory in the sense that first he has argued as many republicans have that this has been a breach of privacy, that this is unfair, that it is not representative of the full picture of his finances. but then, in the next breath, also arguing that there is really nothing to see here, because it ultimately proves what he said all along, which is that, you know, his view, he has been an incredibly successful business man with complicated finances, and that he's created lots of jobs. in a video though, that he released to supporters this morning, he goes even further at one point to sort of signal some potential retaliation coming as republicans take over the house. pretty much directly, asking those republicans, to now take a microscope to president biden, and his family's finances, in return. but you know, as garrett just spelled out there, the reality is that when you look at these numbers over the last several years

leading us off this hour, nbc news correspondent antonia hylton. is in room county, north carolina, for us. antonia, what is the latest here? what are we learning about this attack on the power grid? >> reporter: well, aaron, we are actually waiting right now here at the sheriff's office, and we expect to hear not just from local authorities but actually from governor roy cooper of north carolina to give us a little bit more information, any updates they might have about what is happening with this case. what we know right now is that authorities do not have a confirmed suspect or lead, but they do know that whoever did this did it intentionally and that they're considering this a criminal act. you know, when they were looking at what transpired here, which as you described, gunfire taking down two substations and even breaking down a fence in the process, they believe they're looking for an individual or individuals who very much knew what the consequences were going to look like for this community here in north carolina. so while we're waiting to

antonia hylton is in north carolina for us. in the early stages of the investigation, but what have we learn about how this might have happened? >> reporter: here's what we do know in the midst of this investigation that has a lot of open questions, kate, we know this was an intentional and criminal act. that's something authorities at all levels keep repeating. we heard from the governor here at the sheriff's office yesterday. they believe whoever did this, or the group of people who did it knew exactly what they were doing. in other words, they don't believe it was a group of kids goofing around, that this was a prank or vandalism. it was a group or person who knew what the consequences were going to be and it's all being taken into consideration as they look to confirm a motive and find suspects. they're asking people to call a tip line and trying to get as much information as they can from people who live here. >> i have to ask, it's cold out. how are people coping with no power or heat for a third straight day? >> reporter

antonia hylton is joining us from moore county.k us through the latest on what we know. >> reporter: we're hoping to find out more about what leads the authorities are chasing here at about 4:00 this afternoon. not only will local officers, the sheriff, talk about this case, but we also expect to see governor roy cooper here at the sheriff's office behind me. and look, here's what we know, as you described it, there are rumors and concerns about possible connections here in the town but the reality is that none of those have been confirmed at this time. here's what authorities say they do know for sure. that this was a scary and dangerous incident. those are the descriptions that were used by the sheriff when he talked to our colleague blaine expand ther morning, that this was intentional, that the person or persons who did this knew what they were doing, that the resulting consequences to the community here, that they're living, this is the desired effect. and that what we saw that night, you know, gunfire, taking out these two su

antonia hylton is joining us from north carolina.ing to get their power back. dire situation there right now. what do we know and about the investigation, who did it? >> reporter: in terms of the time line for getting this community back on their feet and the power back, it's looking like the vast majority won't get power until thursday. this is the third consecutive day people have been waking up not just without heat, in many cases without water. they are going days without being able to take a shower. it's been hard to find places to buy food. the gas stations have been closed down. this attack has plunged this community into a bit of a chaotic situation. a crisis, really. there are elderly people for whom being at home in the cold in winter poses a serious threat. there's two tracks to this story here. first, the resources that authorities are trying to make sure people here are aware of. for example, a shelter that people can come to to get warm, to get supplies if they need them. of course, answering tough questions about the i

with us to start off our coverage this hour, antonia hylton is live outside trump tower in new york,s nickels and david k. johnson. he's the author of "the big cheat: how donald trump fleeced america and enriched himself and his family" and joyce vance who is a law professor at the university of alabama. great panel here to talk about this. what are we hoping to learn from these returns? >> reporter: good morning, ryan. well, these returns number in the thousands of pages and they really represent six years of critical insight into donald and melania trump's affairs. while reporters are pouring over these thousands of documents, tax experts are doing the same today. there are a couple of key questions and elements that people are looking for right now. of course, looking into the health of his many, many businesses. things like his taxable income. but also questions about, say, how much tax credits was the former president taking advantage of. what happened in 2020? what kind of hit did his businesses take during the start of the pandemic? and then, of course, you know, donations to

we have antonia hylton in new york. we have "the new york times" investigative reporter suzanne craig as well as philip bump. we know our team will do this throughout the day. what have you learned, garrett, in the last couple of hours? >> much of the tax returns were laid out in the report that came out last week, a summary of what we would see. the top line picture, of course, is when it comes to federal income taxes, donald trump didn't pay much of them over the six years. in some years the numbers bouncing around from large tax burdens like you might expect someone who claims to be a billionaire to pay to some years $750 of taxes, based on losses he accrued. in 2020, zero dollars paid whatsoever and a $5 million refund claimed. as we dig into the tax returns, one of the most interesting lines of inquiry is going to be on charitable donations. we see some major years of donations from donald trump, hundreds of thousands of dollars, a million dollars there. remember in 2016, there was great reporting from "the washing

nbc's antonia hylton is here with a look at the original reporting and you found that you were talkingn, and where this investigation stands, for a district that some say has more of a focus on let's say critical race theory than combatting what many obviously see as racist actions. >> it is interesting, at a time in texas, when so many people are pushing both the parents and the politicians, they have been pushing in some cases to talk less about race and issues of inequality in the classroom, black parents are increasingly coming forward in communities like lubbock and elsewhere to say that they're seeing these times of harassment and want administrators to not just take action but to talk about it and bring accountability to the community. i spent time with black students in the district this past weekend. and they described hearing racial slurs, being called monkeys, as almost every day experience. and then of course, that instagram page that you just described, that was one of the breaking points for many of these families who have been pushing the administration to produce some k

antonia hylton is following the story in carthage. how close are people there to having the power completely restored? >> reporter: hey, aaron, we are getting closer by the minute, in fact, i've just spoken to some residents who texted me saying the lights are back on and the heat is back on in their homes but there are still several thousand customers who are still waiting for the light to come on and duke energy says by midnight tonight, everybody should be back to normal. but that doesn't mean that the pain won't still be felt here in some ways. you know, there are parts of the k.j. with a lot of people who say work hourly wage jobs who lost out on work and the holiday season right at a critical time and so, you know, i spoke to a pastor one of the folks organizing getting supplies, deepers, food, water for families and says there's still need here in moore county even when the lights come back on. people will need gas cards and food support and so they want people to continue to reach out and to support the people here after every
