i want to say aon the battlefield, it was asi said the lines were always moving . i tell you , i started with a political story and in what was really the end of the cold war. a year after i went to belgrade for the first time was the fall of the wall and i covered the aftermath of that and then i covered the revolution. we were there together in prague i remember and the end of communism in hungary. i started covering all that political stuff so when the balkan wars exploded, all of the cold war analysis of the last previous 50 years was totally useless. what we needed to understand is you had to go find out from books to find out the history of the balkans because it was really a dcjc vu all over again. the ethnic cleansing was something that had been happening over the past several centuries . it was unfortunately a typical method of the balkans. so to understand the rise of this rapid nationalism was really, you needed old books. and i talked to a lot of reporters. there had been vicious, vicious fighting to these three communities during the second world war.
