it is owned and managed and operated here at apl. along with them we have other partner institutions across the country and we actually have a large number of international team members contributing to this as well. this planetary defense is an international issue that is one of the pillars of the national planetary defense strategy, is international corporation. host: this is nasa's first defensive mission which makes it historic, was the newly formed u.s. space agency involved at all from the defense department? guest: this has been a nasa mission. nasa is the one tasked with doing planetary defense missions. there is a national plan that was developed in 2018 that involved multiple agencies of which nasa is one. it lays out that missions like this are firmly in nasa's purview and control. so this is a nasa mission. host: tell me about your particular role in this project. guest: i am the coordination lead for dart. it is sort of a new mission, -- a new position because this mission is a little different than some of the science mi

which also might sound familiar because that is an apl-led mission.ve ever seen the first pictures of pluto, that is the amazing quality that we have on dart. >> that is an equitable heritage. everybody who saw those images of pluto, they were amazing. so we now know that a lot of us have smart phones with cameras, we have cracks, smudges, how did your team make sure they the camera made it in pristine condition? >> of course, our hardware, including this instrument, was made in a clean room, very, very high, clean facility in order to make sure the telescope worked. we had to put it through a lot of electrical testing, optical testing, alignment testing. to make sure it performed that intended -- to make sure it performs as intended, we had to put it through all of these environments it will see through space, so we put it through vibration testing, thermal testing, to make sure it will perform and it will provide. >> amazing. test, test, and test again. this is how we get to a stage like this. >> exactly. technology is amazing. we have the technolog

the real challenge i have with so many reports, will whether it's americans with states access, the apl you report, two really great social equity impact reports and supernova, we have a lot of data and tanks use data. so i'm still confused about why we haven't figure out how to solve for the gaps in this data in the report. because that's what the solution is, solving for that. same as we pass as we hope for it is a very different thing. have gotta tell you growing up the way i did, we hope that maybe the plan was for keeping cannabis credible lies in keeping us on the streets is not what happened, so we have to rectify it, fix it and stop telling the story about what we hope will happen in the revised plans of more action for the future. sorry. and i apologize. not really, i don't apologize, this is what it is. but i also feel that there is a bit of an imbalance in that you all are coming from a position where you feel that states by itself will do so much. but again, what constituents are you thinking about? >> we never said it's the silver bullet, it's an incremental. we think it wo

look at our assets that we have right now, maryland is literally the home of the nih and the cdc, and aplxists in the state of maryland, but the challenge we have in maryland is we are asset rich and we are strategy poor. we're not investing the way they need to be invested in. biotech to cyber tech to agri health, how we think about our manufacturing base, we've got the core foundational assets right there. and to include the fact that this is the home of the port of the baltimore, the shared home of the chesapeake bay, so we have a growing and dynamic economy where we need to be able to invest in our institutions of higher education, create more liquidity for our small businesses, create more incentives for people to grow their businesses and stay here, and then frankly for people who are in other states, and particularly other states where we're watching, you know, governors who are using state resources and state assets to make political statements. my answer to you is this, come to maryland. because every time we go to one of their states, i'm bringing three businesses with me, and b
