erika miller, "nightly business report," new york. >> susie: tonight's word on the street: apple. joining us now, lindsey bell. she's an investment analyst at thestreet.com. lindsey, nice to you have on the program. >> thank you for having me. >> susie: all right so, many invests were counting on a bigger dividend. of this's been calling it for a dividend all this time and then they were disappoint. compared to apple's technology peer companies like microsoft or hewlett packard, they pay a bigger dividend. what do you think? >> you know, i think this dividend came in at the low end of what many investors were expecting. but the share repurchase was where the extra bonus came in. most investors i talked to were lacking for four and a half to 5 billion, in share repurchases. we've got 10 billion. and yes, it might be a little bit less than microsoft and intel but it's still a lot better, the dividend i mean, is a lot better than what other big tech companies do offer. >> susie: well, i think everybody is looking at all that cash that apple has. so even after they pay out the dividen

business. so huge, if it weren't part of apple, the ipad alone would be a much bigger business than amazon, maker of the kindle fire. the ipad is also more than four times bigger than p.c. maker dell. that's the conclusion of tuck finance professor anant sundaram. >> here we are talking about a product that potentially is disrupting the p.c. industry and who knows where this is all headed. >> reporter: to show you the math, we pulled out-- what else-- an ipad. professor sundaram figures the average profit on an ipad at $153. if apple stays on track to sell 60 million ipads this year, that will bring in profit of $9.2 billion. now, take that $9.2 billion and multiply it by apple's 15 price/earnings ratio-- a measure of value based on profits-- and you get a market value of the ipad as a standalone business of $138 billion. even for a finance professor, that's a lot of money. >> i myself was astounded. >> reporter: now analysts at i.d.c. say the latest ipad may have a slightly lower profit margin because the high- resolution screen costs more to make. but i.d.c. agrees the future is bright for ipad

what will apple do with all its cash? businesser scott mcgrew has details. >> never before in history has any company had such a cash hoard. they will announce what it's going to do with $98 billion in cash. it'll do so on the conference call with reporters. tim cook has been hinting about this for some time. last night apple announced this morning will be the morning. so let's go through the possibilities. the most obvious thing apple could do is pay a dividend. everyone who owns a share of apple gets a share of the $98 billion. apple could buy back its own stock. this would reduce the number of shares out there and that would boost apple share prices to never before imagined highs. apple could buy something. actually could buy practically any company in the world or let's not forget it could do absolutely nothing. not impossible, but unlikely. why does apple have so much cash money? obviously from selling lots of stuff. but the hoarding mentality is inherited from this man, steve jobs who saved apple from bankruptcy. this is the

and retail stores sell apple gear, doesn't make sense to break that off. the itunes business, if you had to break something off, that would be one thing. relatively small contribution. profitwise even less. if apple will be in any trouble in any area, i would look at supplier side. they have an extreme amount of influence over the global market for flash memory, for instance. there are other components also where they have a lot of influence. you can imagine at some point down the line some supplier could bring a case somewhere saying, hey, apple's got too much leverage here, they're causing it to be difficult to do business. but that's all of that's just theoretical, but it's an area where apple could get into trouble. >> i guess the antitrust concerns are certainly brought to the floor on a regular basis when you see apple having to go through the courts with companies like samsung. i want to ask regards to the share price, josh, it feels to me it's almost a stock priced to perfection when you look at the gains. some people say no from a valuation it's still cheap, but woul
