we have breaking news on the apple samsung verdict. derstand that adam has details. >> this is coming off of thomson reuters for the u.s. jury has ruled in favor of apple saying that samsung electronics, their phones infringe on apple inc. it is a patent infringement, obviously, that this is just crossing from reuters. that the u.s. jury has ruled in favor of apple saying that samsung did infringe upon the patents. there is going to be more of this kind of thing. in fact, here it comes. hitting a button on the computer to recycle everything. there are going to be several of these kinds of verdicts. gerri: adam, as he watches, apple is seeking $2.5 billion in damages. something you watch for during these headlines. do you expect it to happen? do think they will get that -- what would be probably the biggest settlement of the sort ever? >> it would be the largest ever. absolutely. but they have to get through, as you said, the appellate process. dow jones -- and this is from "the wall street journal" -- finding that samsung infringed. the

apple claims their phone was copied and an injunction that would bar samsung from selling the galaxy. experts say if apple wins other companies have to come up with unique features to dwbs their phones. if samsung wins, it may test the limit of what patents can cover. that ultimately this will be good for consumers. >> once we determine what companies have to work around with each other. then we'll see a reduction of price and more features. >> reporter: the jury will likely begin deliberations tomorrow. they face a 22-page verdict form with 36 questions that jurors must decide. it's in the farm whether they believe that the product in question violates any patents. live in downtown san jose, "today in the bay." >> a former gentech employee is suing saying she was harassed and bullied. natia says a co-work esh made comments, asking her if her family belongs to the taliban and if she was on the nofully list. he told her to chill out and placed her on a medical leave. it says it acted properly and lawfully with respect to employment. >> california farm workers may be on the verge of mor

in another suit, the court -- the same court said samsung didn't copy apple's designs despite external similarities. but it ruled samsung did violate apple's patents on some touch-screen functions and ordered the south korean company to pay $22,000 to apple. the court also ordered an immediate stop to the in south korea of some of the two company's models, including apple's iphone and samsung's galaxy. but the ban doesn't cover the latest model just as iphone 4s and is not like three greatly affect the sales of the two firms. the apple/samsung face-off around the world is described as the largest court battle in history over patents. it all started in april last year when apple sued samsung in california. that immediately prompted samsung to file a countersuit. since then, about 50 court cases involving the two tech titans have been going on in ten countries. courts in different countries have given different rulings. last september, a court in germany upheld apple's claim bang sales of samsung's tablets in the country. australia's highest court dismissed the u.s. firm's complaint last

the first being that these are competitors, apple and samsung are actual competitors. also apple actually produces this product, this is a patented product, not just some patent they have sit on the shelf but they actually have commercialized a product for. and then lastly this typically a court might reserve entering a judgement if there was something to implicate the public health or safety but that is not the case here with tablets and smart phones. >> susie: well, you know, samsung has said that it wants to appeal. how do you think this whole legal battle is going to play out. and as for that 1 billion dollars, you know, awarded to apple, will samsung have to pay up? >> well, the amount of damages is still in question. i mean the jury has come up with a $1 billion verdict. however they also found it was willful infringement. in other words, it was intentional infringement on the part of samsung. so the judge will have the opportunity to increase that amount by up to three times. we could be talking about $3 billion. that decision will probably ultimately be appealed

infringed two of samsung's five patents for wireless technology and apple was given a small $35,000 fine. and blocked from selling iphone 4 and ipad 1 and 2 in the country. now this dates back to april of last year when samsung filed a lawsuit in korea to counter claim against apple's attacks in the u.s. district court. as for another suit filed by apple in june the court ruled that samsung violated a bounce back feature but this isn't such a big deal since the korean tech giant replaced its function with new technology. the court turned down apple's claims on patent infringement while it rounded corners and displays are similar samsung's products are different. now, ross, we all know this comes ahead of the jury verdict in the u.s. in which could come out as early as saturday and that epic $2.5 million trial is the one everyone is watching. >> thanks very much indeed for that. that's the latest out of korea. joining us is now brian marr associate vice president. does this have any bearing at all on what's going on in the united states? >> it's symbolic. if

meanwhile, a court in south korea has found that apple and samsung are both guilty of infringing each other's patents. a three-judge panel ruled that apple violated two samsung patents and samsung violated one apple patent. both companies have been ordered to pay small penalties about $20,000 each and to stop sales of their infringing products in south korea. shares of apple edged higher on that ruling, as did many other stocks, making today a pretty good end to a pretty bad week for the market. investors were optimistic the fed still have tools to stimulate world economies. the s&p 500 briefly traded below 1,400 this morning. ultimately, the index stayed in positive territory throughout most of the day on word the european central bank is considering a new bond-buying program. that letter from fed chairman bernanke we talked about, also helped underpin the market. but even with the better tone, volume remained anemic. just over 500 million shares changed hands at the nyse, while at the nasdaq it was about 1.3 billion, the lowest this week. nevertheless, there were some sector standou
