in our apprenticeship program itself, we have hired since the program started -- successfully hired 20 apprenticeship residents. 20 of them are san francisco residents. our overall hire rate significantly exceeds the city-wide inter agency average of local hire which is around 40%. we take our human resources programs and our commitment to investing in and recognizing our workers extraordinarily seriously. you'll hear more about it shortly, but we are incredibly proud of our partnership with local 261 and their leadership and their vision in creating with us the first statewide gardner apprenticeship program in all of california. we have also simultaneously reinvented the way we have delivered recreation. it is considered a national best practice model. we have something which we also partner with local 261 on, something called the william hammond hall gardner recognition awards which again i think are coming up in a short amount of time, another way in which we recognize the men and women in field in partnership with 261. together with 261, we just successfully implemented and launche

the apprenticeship program just started in 2010. we have yet -- we are going to have our first graduation in a few short months. we have been able to hire apprentices in the program that have otherwise net the 34 17 -- the qualifications to be a gardner. those are the eight that we've placed. we placed them as gardeners when we had vacancy was they met the qualifications to do that job independently. local 261 has appropriately said, hey, you know, our apprentices are getting well trained. we want to make sure that they're getting placed in vacant jobs. we agree, which is why we sat down with 261 and dhr and actually pushed for rather progressive rule changes, not just to the apprenticeship program, but to our merit system that allow us to focus on committing that 34 10 apprentices get playstationed as 34 17s. so, there's a process by which they're not actually going to compete with people from the outside. if you have completed 2000 hours or 50% of the apprenticeship program, you you are eligible as an apprentice to be placed in a [

which members of your district get into those apprenticeship programs? because they're highly coveted positions. so, all we ever tried to do was raise the barbie administering this program and we got upset when we saw that it was being pushed off to the side. when we saw that our proposals were dying, just dying. and it wasn't happening. we couldn't get [inaudible]. equipment from these public service trainees for our state certified apprentices, like trucks and stuff. then it started to feel like it was personal. that's why we came to you [inaudible] to assist us at connecting the dots, making sure that these journey level positions that are highly coveted, there's competition for them. because i believe, and we all believe, that there's a great deal of value in the neighborhoods for a strong, committed, capable knowledgeable maintenance worker. whether they be a gardner or laborer. that's what our unions are about, making sure these people are doing good, hard work from the city and the citizens we serve. that's all i have today.
