what was april thinking on april 14 1865? this question captivated millions in the spring of 1865. it intrigued many millions more over the last century and a half. on the evening of the 14th in this theater, president abraham lincoln suddenly stopped thinking. the extinction of his mind made his earlier hours of conscious life on that day all the more urgently absorbing. what had he been thinking just before the end? what had he been thinking all day long after rousing himself sometime before 8:00 a.m. for breakfast with his family. his entire family, including his wife mary, 12-year-old and 21-year-old, a union army officer just back from virginia. people hoped against hope that lincoln had found some peace of mind on his last day. some relief as speaker of the house schuyler colfax put it in his eulogy for him on april 30. from the cares and perplexities that so constantly pressed him keeping his mind of the severest attention. like a bent bow, so it almost lost its spring. the search for what lincoln was thinking on april 14 was made all the more intense by what northerners lea

the april line commemorations again as early as 1866, we see blacks commemorating april 9 1856 pledging that italy had never been beaten, the emancipation proclamation would have been to no avail. in my research i found examples of african american communities, philadelphia chicago, all over the country celebrating april line in their churches and other civic settings well into the 20 century. african-american soldiers pivotal role as agents of liberation, helping to free those slaves would long remain a point of pride within black communities. i mentioned george washington williams, veteran of the appomattox campaign, and one of these regiments would go on to be the preeminent historian of african-americans in the late 19th century. he noted in his many important history books that come as he put it, the brilliant sighting of black troops that ensure the salvation of the unit this critical moment. the fact that african american troops had defeated lee went additional symbolic meaning to the surrender. for lee and his army of northern virginia typified in the eyes of these u.s. men, the

the weather was wet, it is cool, early april. think about the state of the roads, the armies, especially the confederate armies which has been the last several months static around petersburg and richmond. all of a sudden the army has to be mobile and you have to move horses and wagons, artillery pieces and the soldiers themselves. pulling them out of the earthworks, getting them on the road, that is a challenge. and then keeping the army moving and together. as you all know, things unravel on the way. one confederate soldier wrote "day and night blended together. it was constant action and there will be skirmishing and battles every day. another soldier wrote that "night and day blended together, it was constant marching. if we were not marching we were fighting." even union accounts talk about the hard marches and long days on very bad roads. on the map behind me, it is a busy map that you can see the movement of the armies to cover a lot of ground. there are several bottles only way. -- battles on the way. by the time the army

and we convened pedestrian bike advocates and city agencies that have large vehicles 3 meetings in april specifically focussed on the safety of people walking and biking on our city streets out of that process we came up with short-term, middle term and long-term goals the first of which was creating a driver education program and video that video is currently under production and currently on schedule by having that completed by the end of april and developing that blind spot awareness campaign aimed at folks that are walking and biking and they are a little more aware of some of issues and even when trucks pull up next to them they may end up in places where they they can't be seen by trucks through no fault of their own and lastly perform an ongoing large vehicle working group city and private industry to talk about issues on both sides we are in the midst of setting that up currently. mid-term -- we looked at planning issues around physical and temporal separation between large vehicles and pedestrians. anywhere we can not have them mixing was definitely felt to be important and sign

sherman reaches raleigh on april the 13th. after reviewing his troops, he establishes his headquarters at the governor's palace. president davis has continued to fall back. he stops at greensboro where he summons general johnson to meet him. johnston goes to greenberg assuming that davis is soliciting his opinion. asking for a briefing on the military situation. one johnston gets to greensboro, he finds out davis actually has a plan to raise a new army by collecting all the men who deserted or evaded inscription. johnston realizes that plan. then davis announces that secretary of war records will arrive that evening with word on the fate of lee's army. breckenridge arrives. he reports yes, lee's army has indeed surrendered. then johnston said he needs an opportunity to tell the president the truth. breckenridge gives and that opportunity the following day on the 13th. johnston tells them there he bluntly that the confederate soldiers in his army have only the close on their backs, the weapons in their hands and that it would b

we moved it to april so there is an opportunity to apply for work recreation and the of the programs and they agreed to hold some of their slots so youth will have access to those. in the past a lot of the applications were closed by the time we hit the resource fair so the mayor's job college that is may 21 and we will cover that in the next slide. a couple other things we're trying out is experiments on the ground and one is a pilot program. we're hoping to do at mission school sestill in the planning stages but hopefully by this summer we will have internships and credit recovery. we found in the past students in this program didn't have the time to be in a job or internship so we're working with employers, sf made and linkedin and other tech companies to have internships just for them so they can go to that and in the morning go to the credit recovery and a connection between the two and see if what helps them the next year and more successful and likely to graw. hopefully we will do that for 30 young people and something we tried last year that again was successful and this year
