the fire that claimed the life of archie monroe. vernon odom has the details. >> reporter: archie monroe was a quiet man who lived on this block with his wife donna for more than 40 years, they were highly respected in the neighborhood. and tonight the entire wilmington community is mourning their cruel fate. >> all day wilmington firefighters were collecting samples at this rowhouse fire scene as they try to determine the cause of last night's deadly blaze in the 100 block of west 37th street. the home of archie and donna monroe, he was killed as he charged back into the inferno trying to rescue her believing she was trapped on the second floor and then jumped into the arms of neighbors. among them jamar warren injured making the catch. and donna remains hospitalized in critical condition and family and friends are mourning archie monroe's cruel fate. >> going in after a person is out of the fire and he goes in to retrieve his wife. that alone shows his character. that speaks for itself. i pray to god, for his wife. she is going th

this is the home of 65-year-old archie monroe and his wife, donna. e fire department got the call at 11:30, a huge blaze in this residential home on the 3100 block of 37th. donna monroe was trapped upstairs and climbed on the roof and there she jumped to safety and neighbors caught her. she remains in critical condition tonight and the husband in all the chaos and flames did not realize she was out safely and he charged back into the house to try to save her and the fire consumed him. >> tham shows the character of a person and he gets out a fire and goes back in to get his wife. that alone shows his character. >> i pray to god his wife, is going through something now to heal the family. >> everyone in this quiet neighborhood knew and liked and respected archie monroe and family members remain in shock. >> archie was that best all around neighbor. he used to watch everyone's cars and had a car detailing hobby. and he would always wave you down and offer to wash your car. >> reporter: rick, the wilmington fire marshall does not expect to make the rulin
