they work with the national archives every two years to archive the end of term government webites. and that is available for the nara.gov website. but it is when you go and use that, it is using our servers. they keep an off line copy. but we are actually the ones that host those materials. the different industries are set up different ways to protect their exist ing interests. we are finding that every field needs to be addressed differently. we do that. if people want to be taken out of it, we do that. it's basically an opt out type system. we lend books that are more modern. the television collection which is a fantastic new resource you get to search based on closed captions on the united states news programs the last three years for free. you only get 30 seconds back. if you want more, then you borrow the whole program then we put it on a dvd and you send it back. each one of these has evolved a different method. if we deal with them respectively and as a library, non profit, it seems to all around work. we have over a million different moving images to have available to downl

this is the internet archive building, a nonprofit working to archive everything on the internet.one side of the building is a restaurant. it has a residence or residences on top. the homes were damaged. everyone got out okay. working in conjunction with the internet archive and was completely involved and burning through the roof and threatening the apartment building. we had concern about getting the residence in the apartment building out immediately. no one was hurt in this fire. a, worry at the internet archive center says it was the scanning center that burned, the library is fine. if you want to look at the library it is beautiful, an old historical building and it is okay. everything in the inside of it is okay. that is the good news. the workers say they are very relieved. the firefighters now are mopping up and will try to figure out what started this thing. >> also breaking in san francisco, police are investigating a shooting in the south of market area near 3rd and bryant. the victim may have been in a car and another vehicle was possibly involved. the victim was shot

i went to the archives in in the summer of 1992 with a different question. this is rather typical of historical research you think you're going go after something then you go to an archive and find file that looks strange and gets you wondering why is it here? and you kind of put it on your desk, you know, and then you think maybe this will develop in to something i'm not sure. so in the summer of 1992, the soviet union collapsed. ukraine had become an independent country. i saw it as an opportunity as a scholar, i was a graduate student to go to the territory and try to see what was there. i had been looking at material in the national archives in washington, d.c., the things that the military had scooped up. the allies had scooped up. things like the trial documents and capture german records. a lot of material in washington was essentially the high command order. things captured in germany proper. documents from berlin and other nazi agencies that were headquartered in germany itself. so the question remained what about all of those regional offices where

so about a year going through these archival collections. thousands and thousands of pages of documents. copying them and scanning them and bringing them back to the office and i spent a good amount of time going through the transcripts picking out 350 or so of the most important, most represented documents that have told the story. >> foreign economic policy. you concentrate on just the economics? >> guest: indeed and in particular looked at the monetary policies its trade policies as well as its approach with less developed countries. >> host: what did you learn? >> guest: oh god, what did i learn? i learned it's a very interesting volume for me to do because i've done a policy volume at the ford administration's approach to foreign policy which is clearly my specialty. i was interested to see how a lot of stories were finished. the list i started during the early 1970s interesting to see how it plays out and the differences of approach. i guess i take away some of the big themes and lessons and the themes i discovered during this time. i
