"uss arizona" and the "utah." the "utah" very special as well because 52 souls are still resting inside. behind me is the "uss utah." she was struck by two torpedoes. when they hit, they did catastrophic damage. within 12 minutes she capsized taking 58 members of its crew. those that survived were swimming out here in these waters. the ship today is in the salvage mode. in other words, this is as far as they got on the salvage. at the time of the attack, she was completely capsized. you only see the bottom of the hull. from that hull they removed the only crew member rescued from the ship. the "utah" lost 58 men. 52 of them are still inside the ship. this memorial is in that remembrance. the memorial was an aspiration for senator moss from utah. and also for the surviving crew of the "uss utah." in 1971, he came here to dedicate the ground in which this memorial will be built. he said these words which in, i guess in my terms, still haunt me to this day. while we honor those who here gave their last full measure o

well, kingman, arizona is in the northwest quadrant of arizona and it's up in this area that was so unpopulated at the time, there was like 5,000 people in an entire county and this is one of the fifth largest counties in the country, okay? the kids would come to my high school and they had to be bused in from the outlying ranching areas and in some cases all the way up towards utah and get on the bus in the dark and get off and go home in the dark. that's how isolated this area was. when route 66 was popping in the 1950's, here we were this isolated area that could barely get television and these cars were coming in from all over the country with hipster kids and they had intertubes on the top of the car and people are laughing and everything and we're like, whoa, this is weird. well, the traffic on route 66 was always a good clip. because this was the mother road and this is the road to california, but in the summertime it just got crazy and my father had to hire extra help and work around the clock, eight hour shifts. my job in those days was the jugs. because there was no air conditioning.

his book on arizona's evan term governor george hunt. >> if you're going to write a history of arizona, you just can't ignore george hunt because he was so much involved in everything that went on from 1890 to the 1930s. the populist movement, the aggressive movement, the new deal. he ushered in a lot of reforms, brought arizona's water to colorado. he's at the center of everything. george hunt was born in a place called huntsville misery which was named after his grandfather. he was born there in 1859. he was then a part of misery that was largely southerners from the upper south and north carolina, his family came from that area and he was raised on a farm which devastated terribly by the civil war. he was raised in poverty, really and had a very tough time. subsistence farming, he had to live on what theygrew. he had very little education . he didn't have, he had to work on a farm, he didn't have time to floor itself he was more than willing to find something else to do with his life and he decided he wanted to west. he wound up in new mexico and decided to go to arizona on a ferry
