stephanie is live in arizona. fill us in on what's been happening there and what you're hearing on the ground. >> reporter: well, right now you're seeing the most activity. there was just a police escort here to the ranch that dana so beautifully described just a few moments ago here at what they call the cabin out here in the rural part of arizona. i have to tell you, it has been such strikingly beautiful day up here with the cloud cover and the rain came in. up against those stark red rocks, i could see why senator mccain called this home. just now we saw the suvs making their way into the property. it's about a mile long ride to make their way up to the cabin. we've been here since the middle of the night. the troopers were not here earlier, but they're out here now marking this passing we have heard of of senator mccain passing away under his own sort of plan, under his own way. it seems like most of this has been planned out with the reaction that we are seeing here. this is the most activity we've seen here

arizona is one of those places.inema figures she can pipe the right to it, she hit she can pi right to and hit that.he can pi we will see if mc sally can position herself, she survived and thrived in that ceremony, i'm a republican and a conservative but i'm also, appeal to the suburban voters who are down in the gop right now. this is a race that we will see football play. with a talked about issues of military and other things they can connect on. he has never been anti-trump, at least not publicly, kelly ward and sheriff i pyo, and every position he has taken. >> in florida for the governorship we were talking about earlier trump, one of the deciding factors in that race. republicans were smart in arizona, national republicans didn't get involved. let nature take its course, they had two bad candidates and sally, not anti-trump but more independent-minded politician. they didn't come after her and the protective cloak of mitch mcconnell who was behind a lot of the president's victories help her too. republicans k

let me to you more about arizona's story. arizona is over one third latino. there are over 2 million people of color in arizona, and we do not see ourselves in leadership. we have done some positive things in arizona. we kicked joe arpaio out of office. [applause] david: unfortunately, he is coming back again to run for senate. we have to stop him again there. i know. also in arizona, we passed the largest minimum-wage increase in the country. yes. [applause] david: on the other hand, we haven't had a democrat elected statewide in a long time. here is the one that sticks with me. in a state as diverse as arizona, we have not had a latino or latina elected in arizona statewide in over 40 years. 40 years. my friends, that is going to change in 2018. [applause] david: that is going to change. for those of you that don't know, i'm a statistics professor by day. can you believe that? a round of hands for statistics. [applause] david: i appreciate that. we don't get a lot of that. i tell you that because i know the numbers are there. i know the numbers are there to

the mccain family returning to arizona before the arizona farewell to john mccain. his casket kissed by his widow cindy. his daughter meghan overcome with emotion. late wednesday, several of mccain's children came back to grieve and hug some of the 15,000 people who stayed for all hours, coming to pay their respects to the man who represented arizona for more than 30 years. nearly a quarter of the senate here in washington left the capitol early this morning to be in phoenix for today's service. the memorial, the speakers, the readings, and the music all selected by john mccain personally in the year since his diagnosis, including asking his good friend former vice president joe biden to deliver one of today's eulogies. their friendship reflected in their last public appearance together almost one year ago. >> i hope he has heard my profession of gratitude for him. >> it was always duty, honor, country. that's john. john understands what it means to sacrifice for what you believe in. to put the greater good ahead of personal feelings. >> good day, everyone. i'm andr

then, another man who really personifies arizona and another person the people of arizona adore. john mccain himself. >> they certainly were. dana bash, you are at the church and watched so closely. you covered senator mccain so many years. >> that's right. picking up about joe biden and jill, i have never heard. but go talk to cindy, moments ago, as they came out, there was another poignant moment where they were standing in front of the church. cindy mccain went to the car, saw them, came back and gave both of them really big hugs. clearly, so grateful for speech, but obviously the friendship he described they had for decades, more than 30 years. you can see the pictures. you can see the picture on the air of the hearse and the motorcade. one of the things we are also going to see is a larger motorcade. we were talking about the fact that it is larger because there are so many people, again, they call themselves mccainiacs that want to take the journey with the mccain family from here in arizona back to washington. talk about that. >> that's so poignant. as we all remember, joh

and if john mccain fell in love with arizona, arizona fell in love with john mccain.ran a lot of races here. a lot of elections. he never lost. never really very close. arizona loved him. we had one little blip one-time when he ran for the senate the first time. he called me on the phone and goes, well, boy, i think i might have screwed up. i said i'm a why? he said, i was talking to the students and they said, how, -- how come you are the only politician that comes down ere? he said, well, you guys don't vote. ok? [laughter] the other dudes vote like 100%, you know. [laughter] you want people to come down here, you need to vote like they vote out at seizure world. [laughter] i said, you didn't say that, did you? there's this big retirement community called leisure valley. and they weren't really happy with their new nickname. [laughter] so john said, like he always said, i screwed up and we have to go out there. we. [laughter] so we went out and i remember we drove in and there was about a 90-year-old guy in a golf cart right there giving us the finger. and he was gi

to phoenix, arizona. i think we're seeing it now in progress. this aerial may give us an indication. i think -- i believe that is the procession. we may be able to see the hearse. and you know, you're looking at this and you know, we're learning together, but i do believe that they are head toward that destination. perhaps that is where cameras have been set up. we've been watching in this procession. carry senator mccain downtown highways through arizona for several hours now. and again, it does seem that that will be the point of arrival, this destination point there in phoenix, arizona. michael genovese is on the phone with us -- or rather live via skype with us. and michael, again, thank you for being with us. let's talk just a bit more about the legacy of this man. how will he be remembered in your view in the state of arizona? how will he be remembered in the united states by people who may have voted for him or voted against him? how will he be remembered around the world? you remember senator mcca

he did not come to arizona until he was in an adult. what did it mean to the state of arizona to have him represent them so passionately in washington? >> arizona is one of the places where it's the last of the 48 lower states to be added to the union. lots of people come here from elsewhere. john came here, served in the house and in the senate and became a true leader within the state, driving forward the new kinds of ideas that people in arizona come here to help implement. so john's energy and his creativity and all the things about what he has made his life devoted to really resonated with the people of arizona in very significant ways. that's why he has been so successful here and why his legacy will be so lasting. >> you have talked about your d shared admiration of roosevelt. how did that shape the mccain institution? >> roosevelt, we shared this view that roosevelt was a president of action, that he believed in the american ideals and american exceptionalisms and the idea of the mccain institute for international leadership now

so we've den a number of things in arizona, like the arizona medal of valor, this is for unusual heroism or bravery in the line of duty. and we put together a border streak force which is led by our department of public safety in partnership with our county sheriffs. we've got county sheriff mark daniels who is here today, these are men who work with us at the state level. this administration has been working with us at the national level. we've been getting results not only in stopping gang members and dangerous drug bus arresting criminals at the border and have a cooperative federal government in the pursuit. mercedes: ron, talk to us about the counterterrorism task force and what i.c.e. is doing with that. >> thank you for this opportunity, i'm grate to feel share this moment with good friends and people i care a lot about. i.c.e. was created in the aftermath of 9/11 to prevent the lessons learned in that event. so one of the single biggest investments i.c.e. makes in the interagency, in the fight against terrorism surgery with the jtcf, the department does this along with us but c.b

guest: in arizona we had kyrsten sinema. that is no surprise, she was uncontested and we have known for quite a while now. the republican nominee was a bit more up in the air. primary three-way between sheriff arpaio, he made news during the trump administration, and kelly ward. martha mcsorley -- mcsally would be the most likable. in a primary, it's hard to know beforehand even with a bit of polling who would end up making it through. did end at making it through, which is important for the senate map because it arpaio or ward had won, it would make republican's job very difficult. he just began speaking. >> arizona, john mccain. john took full advantage of the mont months since his diagnosis. his hard work continues. happy, reminiscing, fond farewells, final reflections and time with family actually came with the poor. i was going to spend a small time with john. we sat on the front porch in sedona, under the desert sky, replaying old times. john did things his way these last months. for his colleagues here, the town confirmed a sad, but obvious truth. the senate won't be the same without jm. -- john mccain. it's fair to say the passion john brought with his work was unsurpassed with his body. in more than 30 years as a senator, he never -- a big heart and spirit. when john saw an issue the way you did, you knew you just found your best ally. you would thank your lucky stars. when you found yourself on the other side of the table, as i think all of us learned, you were in for a different kind of unforgettable experience. either way, serving alongside john was never a dull affair. i found myself on bothsides o

let me tell you a little more about arizona's story. arizona's over a third latino.re over two million people of color in arizona and we do not see ourselves in leadership. we have done some positive things in arizona. we kicked joe arpaio out of office. unfortunately, he's coming back again, you know, to run for senate. we got to stop him again there. i know. we also in arizona, lot of folks don't know, passed the largest minimum wage increase in the country. yes. on the other hand, we haven't had a democrat elected statewide in a long time and here's the one that sticks with me. in a state as diverse as arizona, we have not had a latino or latina elected in arizona statewide in over 40 years. 40 years. my friends, that is going to change in 2018. that is going to change. for those of you that don't know, i'm a statistics professor by day, actually. can you believe that? how about a hand for statistics? i appreciate that. we don't get a lot of that. don't get a lot of rounds of applause. i tell you that because i know the numbers are there. i know the numbers are th
