votes continue to be counted in the arizona senate election. ema has just pulled ahead of martha mcsally. we go to msnbc's steve kornacki at the kornacki board. steve, what is happening in arizona? >> yeah, in arizona one of the couple of places on the map, lawrence, where the suspense is kind of building here. first of all, let me show you sti statewide. sinema the democrat has taken the lead of over 9,000 votes statewide. that happened this evening. there's one big reason for that and one smaller one. the big reason is this maricopa county, this is where phoenix is. this is like two thirds of the state almost population wise. this is the current running count in maricopa. i say running count because there are still hundreds of thousands of votes still to be added to this. they added them in batches. they added about 125,000 tonight. and from that 125,000 they favored sinema by more than 20,000. that was the margin that cod add got added in here. this istusen, the part of the state sinema was from, also at added a big batch from there tonight.
