a big day here for the european commission, arjun.utline the importance of these two rulings. >> absolutely, for apple, this case began in 2014 when the commission started looking into the tax affairs in ireland. it was 2016 where they off officially said or granted legal state aid. there were appeals and multiple courts and finally the european court of justice said apple must pay the back taxes. that is the big part of this. the second is around alphabet and its shopping sites now. the commission alleged google favors its shop sites over rivals and charged the 2.4 billion euro fine. it feels like a big win as the competition chief who has been, you know, hounding these tech companies over the last decade or so, begins to exit her post as well. it's very significant. we know a lot of the big u.s. tech companies are on watch in europe. a lot of these cases are slightly older cases. since then, things have changed. we have the digital markets act. it is almost trying to tear down some of the walled gardens these technology companies cr

arjun, thank you very much. >>> turning back to the u.s. stocks bouncing back after suffering the worst week on the year. deutsche bank said they should not argue a slowdown. joining me now is greg branch at branch global capital advisers. he is a cnbc contributor. greg, good morning. good to see you. >> good morning, frank. good to be here, my friend. >> i want to go back to the deutsche bank note. some of the weakness we have seen recently has been driven by a small group of stocks. that small group ticked down 5% or more in the third quarter. those were the stocks leading the market most of the year. is that a concern those are the stocks leading the declines although it is a small number? >> i don't think so. i want to separate two things, right? there's the market declines and there's this general fear of recession in the economy itself. i agree with deutsche bank on the latter. for now, this is pretty m much much ado about nothing. we saw the inflation come down from the 30 or 40 basis points month over month that we were stuck in for

it's very important, arjun, that we continue to ensure that innovation is good but innovation-friendly. this scrutiny on the tech giants isn't going to end any time soon. >> they're stepping up everywhere so how does that actually constrain the outlook for some of these big tech players as in their eyes they're trying to innovate further, right, and making investments like this could investments be at risk amid the creation? >> what's going to be key going forward is the way the cma and the uk, but also the european regulators, beginning look at ai, which feels like the next frontier in terms of the regulatory push. we know already the european union is looking at things like the practices of some of the technology giants, whether they're fabering their own products over the services of others and rivals, but i think ai feels like the next big battleground that they're going to have to get ahold on. they have the uai act and the big tech companies are moving aggressively and investing aggressively you see in the last earning season just gone, they're upping their capex. so it doesn't f

senior technology reporter arjun kharpal is joining me from london with more. arjun, good morning. good to see you. >> good morning, frank. good to see you. as you said, micron shares surging on the back of the up beat guidance yesterday. the positive commentary the chip maker says revenue in the fiscal first quarter to come in at $8.7 billion. that is driven by memory chip firms are sensitive to the supply demand picture. last year, memory prices were low with the glut of the chips. now with the supply, prices are rising. that is helping micron up 16% in the pre-market. the company is striking a positive note for the rising demand for smartphones and pcs going into next year. micron is benefitting from the a.i. boom as you mentioned. one of the supply of the chips for nvidia. data center demand is exceeding supply currently. that is helping the company. micron earnings, i think, speak to the broader chip sector with investors looking for visibility on a.i. chip demand. micron appears to have shown the demands still remains robust and pricing for memory chips looking healthier at t

arjun joins us with more.un, explain why we are seeing such positive beats and momentum from micron and how is that driving the performance from the other chip makers? >> it was the earnings that brought the themes within the semiconductor space. one of the things we saw from micron is commentary around supply and demand. micron plays in the area of memory semiconductors. this is the area sensitive to supply and demand. last year, there was a lot of supply. slightly weaker demand. that meant prices were lower. that is working itself out according to the micron ceo who sales there is healthy industry going into next year for two of the key products as well. that was one big commentary. if we read that through to samsung and sk, the two biggest in the world, you saw the shares jumping. s second, the a.i. boom. is it sustainable and continuing? these are the questions the investors have and micron appears to be answering. you saw from the earnings, they said they had quarter record revenue for the high bandwidth

arjun joining us for a little bit more here. arjun, there's so much to speak about. yes, you've got the broad selloff, the semiconductors being key to that, but nvidia being a doj case. that's quite significant too. does that shift how we see nvidia as what some are thinking is a monopoly in this case? >> i think it's going to be interesting because this case is going to be about nuance. we've heard rumblings and reports about the department of justice looking to nvidia. the latest is that they still haven't gotten a formal investigation necessarily, but they've sent subpoenas to nvidia and other companies, legally binding requests for information regarding nvidia. it's interesting because we've got that report, and there was a report about four weeks ago at the beginning of august for information. they said this is what the doj was looking into. one, that nvidia was pressuring customers to buy extra products and the 1k07b8d was weather nvidia was charging higher prices to customers if they wanted to use rival products. and so the nuance is going to be key here. one

arjun is joining us, but we have yuri here with us as well joining us in studio.uri, i don't know what you thought with that interview really around the significance of changes needed with the semiconductor chips needed in the space. there are so many different nuances. you get into cell phones or you get into the large language models needed for artificial intelligence. how much change do you think is still left in this space? >> the change is incredible. if you think about a.i. capability at the edge, it's not just the chips qualcomm provides, but everything. the silicon content of the mobile phones needs to go up because you need better memory and connectivity. it is a propductivity increase for the users. that's what qualcomm is bringing. >> none of the fundamentals are cha changing. you would think demand has gone down cataclysmically. >> i think how the segment evolved is mobile and pcs have been the main driver of the sector. now you see those are not recovered. that's what's so interesting. the a.i. growth in the edge which will coincide in the recovery of

>> arjun kharpal with the latest on the nvidia story. thank you for that. >>> the worst day for the u.s. market since the downturn just about a month ago. joining me now is robert shein. it's a big sentiment and motivational driver for momentum in the markets. how important do we think the selloff is in the context of where the chips fall into it? >> if you look at nvidia or even the sems which are trading around the globe, the real question is this the effect of a slower economy? look at china. we saw soft patches and data that could play into the fed's hands, maybe a soft landing. the sensitivity of sems has always been there. this is no different. obviously it was a large move. we've been there before with nvidia. >> we've been there before multiple times. in fact many have been nvidia-related, but i'm curious whether this story is very chip centric and we know they're a leading indicator for technology. we get that. but how much should we worry about the rest of the eck knollgy part of the story or mega caps in general? is it cstill
