i believe that half-mile path was accurate as it crossed i-40 in arkansas. mobile homes that were just completely destroyed. the frames were bent and smashed all around. as the tornado crossed i-40, several vehicles were thrown off the road. homes were damaged. to the northeast of vilonia, the storm seemed to get stronger and wiped out homes completely. >> brett, we know that there were advisories and warnings of tornadoes in the area in some of the areas of the six states. do you think those warnings were heeded and do you get a sense that it could have been much worse if people hadn't gotten out of the way? >> absolutely. when you're on an interstate and especially in the state of arkansas where you have a lot of foliage around tree debris, it's easy for a tornado to be hidden by a tree until it's on top of them. national weather service did an excellent job to get warnings out. we tried to provide reports as fast as we could when we had a visual on the storm. i think the process worked well. unfortunate that some of the people were able to make it and get

in front of me a tornado watch through morning hours here through arkansas. this is yet again a threat for more thunderstorms throughout overnight hours. there is still a threat for more possible tornadoes out here. but right now we're firmly in mayflower, arkansas we do see a lot of damage. we're on i 40 interstate 40 approaching storm cloud at the time we are facing the storm. there was a tornado warning. the storm was approaching the little rock area. in this case north of it mayflower about 20 minutes or so driving by from little rock, arkansas as far as north. a lot of damage out here. we can see trucks have been flipped over. we saw cars that were almost unrecognizable. they were stacked on top of each other. debris everywhere. arriving at the scene, it was five minutes from where we are. we arrived on interstate 42 traffic was stopped because of the storm. the tornado moved through interstate 40. at the time there was search and rescue efforts we saw people being rescued from cars. that were severely damage. debris scattered everywhere. power lines dow

but that arkansas storm cut the widest path of destruction. this is aerial footage of the damage in mayflower. the storm stretched almost a mile wide and damaged neighborhoods for miles. president obama had this message from the victims. >> i want everyone affected by this tragedy to know that fema and the federal government is on the ground and will help our fellow americans in need, working with state and local officials and i want everybody to know that your country will be there to help you recover and rebuild as long as it takes. >> and the tornado threat is not over this morning. another suspected tornado touched down early this morning in northwest louisiana. let's bring in nbc meteorologist bill karins with the very latest. what are we expecting today? >> that was a large violent, long track tornado for two hours that was bouncing off up and down along the his of arkansas. this morning we haven't had a lot of nasty tornadoes. we have had some really strong thunderstorms with hail and gust e gusty winds. this is the memphis area all cle

so if this was still the arkansas, where was the red? texas wasn't one of the places that crossed his mind. he looks which he had previously decided where of kosovo and he decides it must be to the southwest over those mountains and he decides to cross. now, some have interpreted this as evidence of secret orders. he is going to get santa fe no matter what even if he got across the mountains. maybe so but a look at the map reveals that if he is on the arkansas, the red river right here in santa fe art in the same directions of the direction alone doesn't tell us what about what the objection is. but the path i think it does tell us something. this is the view that he would have had from his christmas day camp it for several days before and after. the past is a low spot in the mountains a little bit to the southwest of the city and if he had stood at the camp and looked south, he would have found a very inviting place to try to cross the mountains. if the mission is to get santa fe this is as good of a place as any to try to do it. if he

the damage in vilonia, arkansas, residents there. this tornado came after another one followed the same path three years ago. an elderly man is dead after a fire in the west town neighborhood. >> judy joins us live. >> police are still here this morning interviewing attendance at the red cross is here to insure everyone has clothing and places to stay. the man who was killed has lived on the top floor of the building. neighbors tell us he was in poor health and needed help getting around. the fire broke out in the 1900 block of west ohio at 10:45 p.m.. it started in one building then spread to the next. when firefighters got the call they learned there was someone trapped inside. when crews arrived this is smoke was coming out the front of the building. they found the man in the front room of the top floor in critical condition. he was brought to the hospital later pronounced dead. tenants say a loud pop woke him up. >> i remember a loud noise like an explosion and then after that i came out of the neighbors said the house was on fir

the weather channel's mike seidel is in north little rock, arkansas. one of the areas that's expected to get hit hard. let pe me start here. what are the areas facing the biggest threat? >> you're watching the storms begin to explode over the past few hours. an active situation now. we have numerous tornado watches in effect. this is the area we are focused on. the red shadeded kwar, the bull's eye. that's where the tornadic storms could pop later on across arkansas. you can see a large portion of the middle of the country under the threat for severe weather now. we have three separate tornado watches. one for nebraska, missouri and the latest tornado watch issued now for arkansas where conditions are becoming more favorable for the development of the long track super cell thunderstorms that could spawn tornadoes. here is a closer view. you can see the line of damaging storms pushing east of kansas city. we had a tornado warning with this particular group of storms earlier. now looking at the threat of wind damage. the storms are racing for columbia. e

arkansas. >> if you look at the radar as we speak, it is all lit up along the south. we have tornado watches and warnings throughout parts of mississippi and alabama at this point. meteorologists keeping a very close eye on it. this past weekend, however, arkansas was really hit hard and sadly the people as you said have been through this before. in fact, nearly three years ago, almost to the day, a very violent tornado cut an erie path along the same exact region and tonight those who have lost everything say they have rebuilt before, and they can do it again. mother nature's fury captured on camera. this is reportedly the massive tornado which ripped through arkansas sunday. the half mile wide twister churning for 80 miles, staying grounded for much of that journey. >> i could see stuff going that way and i could actually see it coming. >> reporter: damage here is significant. the storm ripping off store fronts, tipping over trucks and destroying homes. emergency crews on scene still cleaning

overnight. 16 were killed in arkansas alone. student who witnessed the damage firsthand had to say. he was one of the first on the scene after a tornado flattened a neighborhood in arkansas. >> we knew there would be damage because we saw the tornado on the ground. we knew it crossed the freeway. we weren't really prepared for the scene that we were about to roll up to. this is some really bad damage. cars flipped everywhere. people were screaming. it was a really tough scene. >> 24 million people could be impacted by the threat of more severe weather later today. >>> in south korea, three people have been arrested accused of destroying evidence connected to the investigation into the owner of that capsized ferry. the death toll now stands at 188 with more than 100 still missing. also, new video this morning showing the captain of that ferry being rescued from the sinking vessel. he was in his underwear. he abandoned the ship before hundreds of his passengers, most of them students, could get off the boat. >>> the l.a. clippers
