what do you make of the new laws in indiana and arkansas? >> well these are very significant changes that were made. they're not cosmetic at all. and the question was, when we looked at these laws was, would the final measures that went into effect make things worse in those states for lesbian and gay people. and the answer seems to be in both cases no that the sponsors of this legislation have backed way off some of the possible effects. in indiana, what they have done is made it clear that if there are local ordinances and there are a number of communities in indiana that have a number of ordinances protecting against discrimination, that this will not provide a defense for any provider of commercial services housing, employment and so on they will not be able to plead religious freedom as a defense to an action under the local ordinances. so that's a tremendous step forward. it doesn't provide extra protection. there's still no state wide civil rights act for gays and lesbians. this makes things no worse. in arkansas remarkably enough the
