let me come back to the arkansas journey. i do believe that there is an important principle we can gather from how we did in arkansas that applies nationwide and in the efforts of our governors in other states. i mentioned that in 2015, when we started this initiative, computer science was required to be offered in every high school. we also integrated it into the lower grades in the k-8 curriculum and had to re-train our teachers and we had to, as part of it, offer them a bonus of $10,000 over five years if they became certified teachers and taught in the classroom. and while it was required to be offered, we didn't require students at the time to take the course. so, there was a marketing responsibility i had. i traveled to over 80 high schools holding assemblies across the state of arkansas promoting computer science and encouraging rural schools, urban schools to have students who looked at computer science as a part of their curriculum. the message that i had for them was that if you learn to code and you have access to

in fact arkansas was recognized last year as having the largest share of high schools. the brookings institution recently in its extraordinary long profile on what we have done in great detail recently published a report studying arkansas' role and started the report by saying while arkansas isn't typically known for technological advancement, we have seen a rapid and inclusive expansion of computer science education so that means a lot to me when we talk about rapid and inclusive it bothers me a little bit about not for technological advancement when we've got some of the most technologically advanced companies and arkansas. but i recommend that to you, that report from the brookings institution. my efforts though for this initiative, it's important to note it's started before the pandemic but the education challenges we faced during the pandemic and what people saw in the workaround and education healthcare and work by working virtually or doing telemedicine, people saw and visualized what computer science leads to and how they can solve problems in our society. so to
