arlington cemetery. up the hill in mrs. lee's garden. we are now up on the hill overlooking washington d.c. at the lee mansion. >> the highest point at arlington national cemetery, this was home, this was the home of robert e. lee before the civil war. at the height of the civil war in 1864 the first military burials were made in the cemetery, out of sight of the mansion. quartermaster general didn't think the graves were close enough to the mansion. he found officers who died in service and he had them buried here around mrs. lee's garden to make it more difficult for them to return after the war. >> as we walk along here we see these tombstones and circled the garden. >> they don't go all the way around but they form a border around part of the garden. there is something like at the end of the war, 40 graves of officers. we don't know exactly what montgomery meigs's thinking was but i suspect he chose to bury officers here rather than privates and enlisted men because it would make it more difficult to

arlington is 26 degrees and when you factor in the wind chill, it feels like 16 degrees. here are some other numbers in the area. look at the gorgeous shot that was sent to and from bob mack broonroe. he sent that into our website. that is a beautiful looking shot. look at these other numbers out there. yesterday the high at reagan national airport was 28 degrees and their averages 43 degrees. the wind chill factor is in the teens thugh the afternoon. here is the satellite picture which shows you the clouds streaming in from the north. snow showers will affect western maryland and the highland areas off to the western slopes. some of that action could come across so we cannot rule out a passing snow shower this afternoon. if you're going to be outside for an extended amount of time, bumble up and lawyers. yers. we will get another shot of cold air as temperatures are too moderate midweek, another batch of cold air will arrive by the end of the week. we will go into the 20's tonight and it will feel like the teens. it will be breezy and brisk tomorrow wednesday and thursda

please join me in thanking the arlington ladies. please stand, ladies. finally, some of you not only married someone in uniform, but we -- we sometimes don't remember that many of you also wore a uniform yourself. you volunteered, you served, you defended our freedoms. so please, would all the women who served in the armed forces please stand and be recognized. to all of you, thank you. thank you for your service to this country. so the president and i as you have heard and our daughters, we have been in the white house for a year now. it's been a year. as a mom i often say my priority this year has really been the girls. making sure that they make this transition smootly, as smoothly as possible. you think about it, these little girls, they have had to get adjusted to a new city, new house, it's a nice house, but it's still a new house. to a new school and new friends. and so when people ask me what i'm most proud of this year, i usually give them two responses. i usually say first as a mother i am most proud that our two girls have made that adjustment

that is why i -- that is what i thought about as i stood on the hillside in arlington on christmas eve morning. that is what i talked about with jackie over this holiday season, and that is how i came to the conclusion that in a long sweep of american history, there are moments for each elected public official to step aside and let someone else step up. this is my moment to step aside. there will be time to reflect in more detail on the years i've spent in public service. there will be time to celebrate victories and more setbacks, share laughs and memories and to thank profusely the talented, tireless and numerous staffers, many of whom are here today, who have made my set work possible. but that time is not now. my service is not over. i still have one year left on my contract for the people of connecticut. one year from this week, our state will have a new united states senator. in the meantime, we have important work to do, so few closing thoughts. i believe in bipartisan solutions, but i also believe you can only achieve those results with vibrant, robust, and civil partisan debat
