back at arlington national cemetery, it's a diverse unit and i performed mission in arlington but theres of units i didn't belong to so i didn't block to the colorguard which is in the white house or congress. i didn't belong to the war, which is what it sounds like, soldier musicians playing drums, probably the most distinguished military band in the world. very unique wearing hats and weeks and drums and many of which are handmade for them. i served in the commanders in chief guard which the 1784 continental uniforms in the commanders of chief guard rack in the first president. a lot of time researching the book writing about and giving the inside story about the training were taken to the cemetery and preparation from day-to-day preparing for 30 funerals are doing ceremonies or inauguration, george h w bush last year. >> when you are dealing with this day today, does the military measure and determine maybe we need to give him a rest from this duty to give a chance to recharge? >> i didn't get many rest while i was there. there's a o part due to the strn the war had put on the army,

i knew that arlington and the old guard had their origins in the civil war. that it had been robert e lee's plantation to be exact it had been his wife's plantation and he had lived there with her through their life, but i did not know all of the origins of it. i do not know for instance that arlington national cemetery was the first national tribute to george washington. that robert e lee's father-in-law, george washington custis had been they adopted child of george and martha in washington and he styled his home in arlington and opened it up to the public as a tribute to our nation's first president. i also did not appreciate the old guard history. the old guard is literally the old guard. it goes back to 1784 and has fought in every major war up through world war ii. it's only become a ceremonial unit since 1948. so i did not know that deep and rich history but i learned at altering the research for this book and i hope everyone will enjoy that. >> is readers will find outcome of the senator not only serves in the ford theater, but then he comes back and

i'm sure a lot of you that have been to arlington national cemetery, they call it arlington heights. if you look across the potomac river you could see washington, d.c. the great fear was the confederate army could roll up artillery to shelve the city. that was a justified fear. the moment they believed virginia would secede from the union, that evening, u.s. soldiers, including regulars, crossed the potomac river and occupied arlington heights. they shifted south towards alexandria. even months before the battle of manassas, the union forces crossed the river and occupied virginia. i called this the union shield. you will see what i mean. the first spot will be the arlington heights. it was a great fear they could shelve the city from that area, especially when virginia breaks away from the union. it breaks off the river and occupies the heights. that is towards alexandria as well. by the end of may, 1861, there are 2000 troops on the virginia side. most importantly, they have already begun building. there is joseph mansfield, tasked with the department of washington. he will report

moisture straight out of the far reaches of the tropical pacific and pouring is onshore to california, arlington, and also into washington. it really is an incredible amount of moisture, and the rain and snow continues. now, the worst of it is going to be ending in seattle, but it's going to be sliding south along the northern california coast overnight tonight. look at how much rain we've seen so far-- generally 4-7 inches. 6, 7 inches in seattle, top five rainiest days ever in seattle. yesterday, to give you an idea, some of the mountains, 10, 11, 12 inches of rain, and obviously higher toajtses of snow fall, 4, 5, 6 feet of snow. this whole thing will slide down the coast to monterey and san francisco and eventually tomorrow moving into los angeles. it will not be as strong anymore once it gets into southern california. in the southeast, we have a pretty strong storm, and this is going to caus cause sevier weatn florida, and lots of heavy rain all across the southeast. watch out for the possibility of isolated tornadoes from tampa to fort myers later tomorrow. and tomorrow night as we head in
