joining me, democrat from california, and member of house armed services committee. ittee, i know your committee is looking into and plans to look into hearings on this issue. who do you want to hear from, what do you want to hear? >> normally we would be hearing from top echelon of the military, probably the secretary, of the chief of staff, others, centcom commander and we'll learn what's going on. we have been briefed in the past on run up to the situation and we'll get more information along the way. the real question is that the military, are they doing their job. the answer is undoubtedly yes. are there mistakes medicated, probably so. could we have anticipated the total collapse of the afghan government, army, police force would occur, probably not. we were a month ago with top leaders hearing everything was in order, all they needed was continuation of american air support and intelligence, all of which they had, and promise of continuing financial aid. they said they would be strong. turned out they were not. actually negotiations were under way between the t

the chairman of the house armed services committee. mr. chairman, thank you for being here.publicly or put out a statement since the taliban took control of afghanistan. what is your assessment of how bad this situation is right now. >> well i have spoken publicly. i was out of the country when it first started but since i came back if i've been on tv several times and have spoken about it first of all. my assessment, it is a great tragedy. i mean, the tragedy is that we tried for 20 years to get in place a government in afghanistan that could be a reasonable alternative to the taliban and all people involved in that effort were unable to do it and now the taliban is back in power and the kayot that we knew would come if they were would come, it has come. and it is a great tragedy. we've seen it play out and it makes me very sad to see this happening. >> is it clear to you how to fix it in this moment of crisis unfolding before us? >> well, first of all, the sad truth of the world is you can't fix everything. so i don't know that there is a way to fix it. i think in the shor

he's a member of the house armed services committee, also a u.s.e corps veteran who served as an intelligence officer in the middle east. thank you so much for being here today. what are you looking for from the president today? >> well, i hope he tells the truth. thus far, every time the president addressed the nation he has not leveled with the american people. he's told multiple lies. he said they planned for every contingency. obviously they did not. he said our allies haven't complained about the lack of coordination. yes, they have. he said americans aren't having problems getting to the airport. of course they're having problems. most notably he said al-qaida is gone from the country. that is a lie. his intelligence and defense officials had to immediately correct him. al-qaida isn't just present in afghanistan. we have reports that the khanni network which has deep ties to al-qaida is effectively in charge of security around the airport. because of the incompetence of the surrender and withdrawal, here's where we are, 20 years after 9/11, w

. >> so you're a member of the house armed services committee. are you getting the answers you want from the administration about whether there is a plan to prevent a full-scale security collapse? >> we've certainly had briefings, including from the secretary of defense and the airman of the joint chiefs. i think what i'm interested in is sort of opening up the hood and understanding a little bit more of the detail. certainly as someone who served in iraq and was involved when we were pulling out of iraq and then involved when we were going back in, in 2014, when isis took over territory. and then i'm interested in our diplomatic approach. right? we know that peoe like the taliban, they want to be treated like a real vernment. they want to be able to go to international conferences. well, we should hold out on some of those things until they show that if they're going to be present in an area, they're not going to violate human rights and, you know, squelch women's opportunities. and so i want to know what the diplomatic play is. and then if we r
