these are two of the top priorities for oakland's police chief, laronne armstrong. he's been on the job for six months now and joins us live to talk about what's working and what still needs to be done. chief armstrong, thank you soap so much for your time. crime is up. fewer resources. and crime one of your top priorities. what steps have you taken to tackle this increase in crime? >> well, thank you for having me. one of my primary commitments when i took on the job as chief of police was to address the spike in crime in oakland, to try my best to make oakland a safe city, and we've been doing that. we've reorganized the department to create a crimes operations center, to be more focussed on violent crime. we've increased the number of resources in the community. in particular, we have now officers walking in the chinatown area. we've been deploying additional officers throughout our city. so it's been a tremendous challenge, but i've also called for more community involvement, more community engagement and more solution-based discussion which we've been having th

take a look at the plume of smoke from armstrong lookout off of highway 88 as the sun rises we can see the smoke going higher in the atmosphere showing that this fire is spreading quickly and we are most likely going to see that continue as the winds shift direction. we have new red flag warnings up. the caldor fire and the dixie fire may see some spreading as well as the wind comes out of the west/southwest. think about that. that's going to push it off towards the northeast with northeast of the caldor fire, south lake tahoe. this is starting to enter into the tahoe basin and moving closer to more populated areas. we're really concerned watching that this morning. we are seeing some of that smoke coming in. we've had a lot of that smoke over the weekend but as a westerly wind picks up we're going to see the smoke clearing out for later today into tomorrow. our air quality is improving but unfortunately once again the fire is going continue to spread and just look at how it's off the charts there with how much smoke is expected as this fire explodes over the next couple days. looking

count civil rights attorney john burris says the department has made great strides with laurent armstrong as chief. shootings by officers have gone down as have racially based traffic stops message he has sent this video that he wants this to work there were problems come up and raises issues about being on on message here shot to correct it immediately it is encouraging and for our officers and for community i think everybody should fill a sense of hope, the chief said. while he appreciates the praise it's not over yet it's good to see that you were being recognized for the work that's being done. but we have not cross the finish line and so there's still more work to be done you really want the oakland police to succeed i think everyone knows that attorney jim chanin says officers have made mistakes but the department has shown it has learned from those mistakes they've gotten a lot of criticism 95% to 100% as well deserved um but it's time to give them some prayers as well this week independent monitor robert warshaw said he has quote cautious optimism about an end to court oversight.

oakland police chief laurent armstrong says the city's crime rate keeps him up at night. chief recently spoke about his first six months on the job, police say right now there have been 78 homicides in oakland this year compared to 54 at the same time last year. the chief says he's asking every officer even those normally assigned to desk jobs, too. patrol the streets for a few hours each day, the department confiscates at least 100 guns every month. even so, gun crime and robbery rates are up this year. i'm alarmed at the things that we've seen in chinatown. the videos that i watch when good samaritans are attempting to step up and they're being shot. it really says that there is a need for greater presence and stronger levels of accountability in the city of oakland, and that's what i'm seeking to do. chief armstrong says one of his main challenges remains a shortage of officers, he says the city population grew about 40,000 over the last 10 years, but police staffing has not changed. governor newsom is promising more aid for the city of oakland as the city confronts ri

armstrong says he plans to hold a news conference on thursday to discuss the department's plans to reduce violent crime in oakland. a man was sentenced to life in prison without parole today in the stabbing death of university of iowa student mollie tibbetts. she grew up in oakland before moving to iowa with her family. her body was found in a cornfield in august of 2018, about a month after she disappeared, christian rivera was an undocumented farm worker from mexico. he was convicted in may. he was sentenced after a victim impact statement from tibet's mother, which said rivera violently. and statistically ended her daughter's life again. rivera was sentenced to life without the possibility of parole today. elizabeth holmes promised to revolutionize the blood testing industry with her startup theranos, but her claims about the technology turned out to be bogus. she is now facing criminal charges in a case that has become one of silicon valley's biggest scandals. jury selection begins this week in federal court in san jose ktvu investigative reporter evan sernoffsky is covering the trial
