army corps determined there appears to be some there there. let's proceed but also look at a bigger program, probably more suited in terms of scale. so we did those two things in parallel. just a couple months ago we were awarded a scarce new start appropriation, the first slug of money you get for one of these things which is typically a multi-year source of funding that indicates federal commitment. we are excited about that. they are extremely scarce. only six awarded nationwide last year, only two that were flood studies so we were one of two, the previous year there was zero. so we are feeling very fortunate about this. what does that mean? it's a four-step process, you have to get authorization from congress to ask for money for a study and you have to ask for money for the study and get authorized by congress to build something and ask for money to go build something. so a four-step process. we were lucky enough to tap into the first part from 1996 that covered the bay. moving on, step 2 is to actually conduct the study with the court.

they were commissioned as captains in the army corps of engineers and went over as soldiers. they had free range to cover much of what the experience of the soldiers was. they can go to the battlefield and covering behind the lines. they tried to capture the full range of the soldiers' experience. perhaps the most well known was harvey dunn who you see here depicted in his military uniform. dunn was perhaps the most bold of the artists. he had little fear in covering the combat side of the war. he would get right up to the front lines and was very much engaged with capturing the soldiers as they were experiencing combat as well as a range of other experiences. dunn also created this very innovative tool. he created this metal sketch box which he used in the combat zone. if you have a big open sketch pad in that environment it would be difficult to use. he created this metal box with two scrolls. he was able to turn the handles and move to a fresh page when he was ready to do a new artwork. here we have one of the scrolls that depicts one of his studies for one of his later pa

as i mentioned, the artists were part of the army corps of engineers, the group of the military that builds things, that moves things and since world war i was all about mobilization of massive supplies and resources, the engineering component was a big part of what world war i was about. so we see examples of supplies being off loaded, trucks and other transport equipment and one of the best known of the aef at works is this depiction of a soldier who was part of the army corps of engineers. this was an engineer soldier. let's turn to perhaps the heart of the aef art collection, the battlefield paintings. perhaps one of the most compelling and best-known paintings in the aef art collection, one by harvey done is called the sentry and this is really compelling. you see a lone soldier but you see the fatigue and stress and loneliness of war on his face and it really gives a very powerful expression. there was a famous art work from the second world war which was called the thousand yard stare which was often reproduce and you saw the drawn look on the soldier's face but i think dunn's
