[ applause ] trump's impulsive stream of consciousness tweets might seem embarrassing for an incoming president, but trump is apparently proud of his twitter presence. so proud, that according to the "washington post", he boasts to friends, aides, and journalists alike, about the quality of his writing and claims that people call him "the ernest hemingway of twitter." [ laughter ] though i would say you're just the ernest of twitter. [ applause ] seriously, if ernest hemingway heard you say that, he would kill himself again. [ audience ohs ] [ laughter ] and any hopes that trump would start this week focused on serious issues were shattered when meryl streep -- while not mentioning him by name -- had this to say

conversation that i enjoyed with former california governor arnold schwarzenegger at his home high above los angeles this week. his line that donaldheadlines it generated had nothing to do with the much more substantive content of our conversation. that distortion tells a lot about the political climate where more attention is paid to celebrity tweets than political solutions. see, governor schwarzenegger didn't invite me into his home to talk about his "terminator" franchise, mr. olympia legacy, nor his relationship with the president of the united states. instead, the former california governor asked me to come over and share a stogies oh his back patio and talk about gerrymandering. count me in. see, he'd been watching when i did a segment on that subject on my primetime special on cnn called "fixing the divide." and arnold tweeted his gratitude for covering the issue. i even mentioned his tweet when i came back from a commercial break. check it out -- look at who tweeted in realtime, the terminator. we're talking about it because donald trump tweeted it out in the same breath he tweeted out about arnoldger. >> i know. say no more. >> don't let us get distracted by that as well. i have to ask myself, would we be talking about this at all if he hadn't tweeted it out? wouldn't we be talking about sessions? >> he made two pieces of news here this morning. not just there was no court order and assuming he wasn't being careful with his words, it sounded fairly categorical to me. but the other was there is simply no evidence of collusion, at least while he was there, which was until very recently between the trump campaign and the russians. so what have we been talking about for the last three weeks? >> waking up at 6:00 a.m. in the morning, tweeted out one of the most damning accusations one president could make against another and then talking about arnold schwarzenegger, that is not presidential behavior. that is juvenile behavior. and the fact we have a president that engages in that is deeply disturbing. we will have to go to europe and interact with other world leaders. what would you

donald trump ever really understood. he would be somewhat, reminds me actually in his own way ironically of arnold -- that's what i don't think the republicans understand. >> you said something that resonates bret when you talked how he's treating republicans as disposable. i think there's another way of looking at it. for a lot of republican primary voters they feel as though tradition al republicans were treating them as disposable and donald trump came along and actually spoke to them, spoke up for their interests and pledged to defend them. i think that's a big problem because paul ryan has an imperative that's an intra republican imperative. how does he divide the constituencies, and satisfy their zeal -- >> -- did a focus group with 35 trump voters. they are staying with him but they are very angry with the republican congress, you know. they thought that trump had gotten their votes in part because he was not one of them. so the question is when you move from that kind of political arena to the legislative process, how does trump satisfy his voters who heard a positive message and get anything through congress. >
