saying arredondo had outstanding conduct. priscilla johnson was at last night's meeting and joins us from uvalde. how are people there reacting? >> reporter: jose, this is news this community has been waiting on for three months. finally last night, it came with the school board finding that there was good cause to terminate pete arredondo's contract effective immediately. you saw most of the people in that room erupting in cheers and applause as that was announced. the meeting did start on a much more contentious note with those family members and community members going up to the microphone, expressing their concerns, calling for accountability and transparency and then that board went into a closed-door meeting for more than an hour. you could feel the tension in the room mounting until they came out and announced that decision. as you mentioned, pete arredondo was not there that night. his attorney, instead, releasing a 17-page statement in which he said this was a violation of arredondo's constitutional right to due proc

i wonder is the singular focus on arredondo too much?who should lose their job? was there blame to go around here? >> i think that was part of the goal of the report was to, you know, to not fall into this attitude that if we fire one person, that we somehow solved the problem. there was a broader problem here. i think it is natural for us to want to say i want to point at one person, i want to point at one thing, because it helps us go to sleep at night. if we close our eyes to the systemic problems here, then we're going to continue to have these failures time and time again. so that's why i think it is good that dps started their own internal investigation, both the uvalde police department has done the same thing and i think the sheriff's department has done the same thing, to start the process of understanding who did what and when. there are hundreds of officers on the scene that day, but many of them never even set foot in the hallway. some just to provide medical care. the roles are different and the analysis for each one should

arredondo placed on unpaid leave.rom the city council and still technically keeps his job. all this played out as state investigators were in july. on july 23rd, the national status meeting on pete arredondo's job and in that report, the state investigation, the texas department of public safety essentially blamed arredondo for him being behind the reason why officers did not go in. since then, members of the community have been sounding off asking for his resignation or his firing. let's take a listen to one member of the community down there, a parent of a child at u valdy and what the mood is like there now. [ speaking non-english ] >> certainly, hallie, the school year starting just a few weeks in uvalde. the school board meeting is eagerly anticipated tonight. many parents in that community want the resignation of pete arredondo, exactly three months after the massacre. they don't want just his resignation. they want him to be fired. some feel that even if he were fired today that it could be too little, too late

but arredondo was unanimously fired. asa said, say 17-page statement from arredondo.ic comments even in written form that we've seen from him so far. a public lynching he called it and his attorneys added that none of his decisions demonstrate a failure to meet the accepted standard of conduct for law enforcement officers in similarly situated school districts in texas, basically saying, listen, he did what was required of him to do. he has said before that he did not believe he was the incident commander on the scene but law enforcement experts around the country have essentially said that that argument is ridiculous. many community members also feel the same way. we heard from several of those parents yesterday as well. take a listen. >> you don't care about these families. if it was one of your children, heads could be roll right now. but because it is not, you don't care. >> 21 lives lost. and mr. pete arredondo is asking for justice. we ask for justice for our grandkids, our kids. >> and there is no word on whether arredondo will appeal this decision. school star
