joining us now is author artur davis. i want to start by congratulating you on what is the most insightful, if i make him may, critique of the president last night. and like you, i thought that it was a stirring statement and brilliantly done. >> it was a stirring speech, the two things about bill clinton's speech last night. all 49 minutes of it, you never heard the formulation for the phrase, barack obama has succeeded. now, let's think about this. you have a president running for reelection. one is the last time a president has run for reelection and his biggest booster can't bring himself to say that he had 49 minutes to say it -- that might not succeeded. point number two, one of the major points that president clinton made last night something that we hear from my democratic friends all the time that didn't mitch mcconnell promise to block his reelection, something everyone in the audience will appreciate. when mitch mcconnell made that pledge, he had 40 votes in the u.s. senate. not even enough to sustain a filibus

we have artur davis with us right now, would moved heads at the republican convention.im when he entered and i wonder if he thought if he was at the right place he once introduced president obama four years ago switching vied to the republicans and now, congressman, something must be in the water because charles crist is going to return the favor, a former republican governor, announcing his support and confidence in president obama. what do you think of that? >>guest: well, i notice that he is speaking on thursday night right before the vice presidential candidate and presidential candidate so i wonder if he has the clint eastwood role or maybe he is the empty chair. i don't know. >>neil: do you think, does that put guys like you, i am never one to question motives, in your case or certainly governor drive, but does it hurt you in when people fail and they change parties and others who you changed to, and they are lovely and happy to have you, that is what you ran into, among your fellow democrats, and that is what he is running into, charles crist of the republicans,

this is artur davis, if you will be met please give it up for president barack obama. half a century ago, ronald reagan, the man whose optimism was inspiring to me to enter politics, he famously said at one time that he did not leave the democratic party. but the party left him. listen, i can relate. i didn't leave the republican party, it left me. we must create an economy that is built to last with jobs. we must rebuild our roads and bridges and improve our public schools. in particularly important to me in my state of florida is the challenge of saving medicare and social security so that we can keep our promise to our seniors. jericho. [applause] there are commonsense solutions in our reach. we only have leaders that are willing and enthusiastic to find common ground. no political party has a monopoly on that kind of leadership. as a former lifelong republican, it means that today's republicans just aren't up to the task. jericho.
