we have arturo santiago live with the details. >> reporter: good morning, jon. the team's catamaran is swift on the open water, but it turned out to be a slow process getting it back on to shore. take a look behind me. they are using floats and a crane to keep the hulls on the surface of the water. they are containing the pieces and get that catamaran using the crane and lifting it up on shore and figure out from there what needs to be done. the team floats on its back turtled as it works to get it upright and on shore so the damage can be assessed. the catamaran hit a wave while the 14-member crew was training on san francisco bay yesterday. >> the boat was going 35 knots in speed. then the bows dug into the water and the boat pitched/pulled and toppled over. >> reporter: once it capsized, mother nature worked against the crew. there was a strong outgoing current. >> that swept the boat out into the ocean and bigger sea way. more wind and that caused the most damage. >> reporter: this is a big setback for the team in its defense of the america's cup. the crew l

arturo santiago is live at nasa ames at moffett field. just how big was this one? size of a small compact car? >> reporter: that's exactly right. around that size is what they're saying. one astronomer here was monitoring this meteor very closely. he's hoping to have video from the sunnyvale cameras. in the meantime we have video from the lick observatory in san jose. here it is. the meteor streaking across the sky is at the top of your screen there. it actually entered the earth's atmosphere over the bay area just before 8:00 last night. now, this is not part of the orionid's meteor shower we'll see the next couple of days. it became visible when it was about 70 miles above the earth. again, one astronomer believes it was about the size of a car when it hit the atmosphere at around 25,000 miles an hour and then started breaking up. people reported hearing a loud boom and then saw the bright orange and red fireball. >> the color of the meteor you see can tell you a little bit about what the meteor is made of. if you see yellow, it's sodium and iron. magnesium will

arturo santiago is live with how customers' information was swiped. arturo, good morning. >> reporter: barnes&noble says it is a sophisticated effort to steal the information of its customers. the company is advising anyone who used a card at their stores to change their pins and also to look for any unauthorized transactions. the barnes & noble is one of 63 stores across the country to have one of its pinpads compromised. only one device in each store was hacked. the criminals planted bugs in the affected pin pads to allow them to obtain pins and credit card numbers. barnes & noble stopped using the pin pads at all the nearly 700 stores nationwide and that happened on september 14th. there have been some cases in which information was stolen and used to make unauthorized purchases. some of the customers we talked to are hesitant to use cards at barnes & noble. others, not so much. will you use your credit card here or debit card here? >> sure. i mean, we cannot stop all these things. >> the card that i have, i have protection on it, so if something ha

arturo santiago is in sports authority in san diego with a look at the new gear coming out. >> reporter: in case you haven't seen it, here's a fresh look at some of the world series championship gear for the san francisco giants. this sports authority got a shipment of world series championship gear a half hour before the team actually won the title. the merchandise went on sale immediately after the final out. there was an enthusiastic line outside of the store earlier this evening. they were the giants fans who couldn't wait to get their hands on something that says world series champions on it. that includes, for now, a few different styles of t-shirts, they had pennants and flags that said world series champs but those sold out fairly quickly. all sports authority stores stayed open to accommodate fans who had to have that championship gear tonight. >> why couldn't couldn't this wait until later. >> i want to wear it to work tomorrow. i'm purchasing items for my husband and son who aren't able to be here this evening. >> i went to a halloween party dressed like this because i refuse
