cnn's arwa damon joins me live now from istanbul. turkey's president says the country faces a wave of afghan migrants through iran. what more are you hearing about that, and what role will turkey likely play in stabilizing afghanistan? >> reporter: well, rosemary, a couple thing tuesday address here. those number of afghans currently in turkey they're not necessarily part of a newer wave, ones that came across once the taliban takeover of afghanistan began. the other thing also to note is that when we talk about a refugee influx into neighboring coun countries, we're not really seeing that just yet. why? because most of the roads are blocked. the only lifeline for afghans, and this is only a lifeline for afghans who are fortunate enough to have a passport and visa elsewhere is right now the kabul airport. and that choice to leave their own country is now being denied to them by the u.s. military who has effectively taken over air-traffic control and has thousands of troops guarding the military side of the airport. when it comes to t

let's bring in arwa damon.g about the taliban takeover and what is presumably hundreds of thousands of refugees? >> reporter: he has called it an occupation but also worth noting that as of this specific moment, we're not seeing that massive influx across afghanistan borders into neighboring countries. why aren't we seeing it? because the vast majority of the roads are blocked. the airport as you have been reporting is not open to commercial flight. so even though afghans who consider perhaps fortunate enough to have a passport and visa, that choice that they could have had to flee, to leave their country, that has also been taken away from them by the united states. but what turkey most certainly does want to do and what a number of other countries do want to do is try to prevent any sort of influx from taking place. remember, turkey is still reeling from having millions of syrian refugees in country especially after europe closed its borders. so it doesn't want to see any sort of scenario that sees an additio

arwa damon is joining me live now.turkey's president says the country faces a waiver of afghan migrants through iran. what more are you learning about that? >> reporter: well, look, a couple very important things to discuss here. when it comes to the conversations about this afghan refugee crisis, it is worth noting that when it comes to turkey for example, those 100,000 plus afghans that are here, they are not necessarily individuals who arrived recently following this very rapid takeover of the taliban. and so what we are actually seeing now is a very, very limited crossing of borders by afghans trying to flee their own country. why? because the taliban has blocked most of the roads.s have a veryg relationship with two countries who do, pakistan and qatar. turkey can't really afford another refugee enflux. it is still dealing with the millions of syrian refugees in country. europe years ago shut off its borders by and large to the influx of syrian refugees so turkey is trying to mitigate the potential consequences of
