community, as a city. what happened when the 49ers won those super bowls year after year? that was a huge deal for our city and our community in san francisco. what happened with the world series this year when the giants won for the first time in over 50 years? incredible. everybody was celebrating. and that is a huge deal for our community in san francisco, but i think, economically, not only jobs in terms of construction of stadiums and what have you. economically, you know, for those people who do not believe or do not really fully appreciate what type of economic drivers the sporting events and teams are, go down to soma during a giants game. come to the marina when the blue angels fly in town. what it does to the local streets and bridges. come to district 3 and district two and districts 6 and 10 when the america's cup comes to town and see what type of influx of economic activity these events drive to us. i think that is something that is not talk about enough. both the community aspect, the intangi

city college. so it is with that that i am presenting today a very important decision. in recognizing the importance of our city college to us as a city, i also want to make sure that we recognize as a family the serious challenges that are before the trustees and before the interim chancellor as we would care to meet them. there will be very difficult and important decision that will need to be made in order to address the recommendations that are set forth by the accreditation committee. there will also be a lot of good faith negotiation that will have to happen in order to protect our city college. but tough decisions and reforms are what city college needs at this time. and we must first protect and serve the students of city college and make sure they remain have our number one priority. but any improvement means change from the status quo. it will also mean decisions about reform, decisions reflecting strong leadership and good governance that will improve our city college system and protect this accreditation. to that end, i have given very careful consideration about who to appoint to fill this vacancy at such a critica

this is a city that has many thousands of small businesses. asomeone who used to run a small business, the city can do a much better job of nurturing that sector. that is part of the life blood of who we are as san franciscans. >> we could do better. are we on the right track? >> i think we are in a transition right now. we have an interim mayor and a new board of supervisors. i do think we have a new tone at city hall to move things forward. we have a lot of challenges we are facing. i am doing everything i can to put us back on track. >> let's talk about the role of sports in the city's economic future. are you happy with the plans for the america's cup? >> i have been a huge fan of the america's cup. i am proud of this board came together unanimously after a fairly contentious debate to support bringing the america's cup to san francisco in 2013. it is estimated it will not only be an incredible sporting event, not only showcase our city and the natural amphitheater of the bay, but it is estimated to bring in over $1 billion in economic activi

i wish the companies that we -- as a city could do business with had a different track record. the reality is that the reason why jurisdictions like ma ren county are doing business with shell is because that is the only option we have. that is to say, though, that we have to understand that as we look at this contract, the goal of this contract ultimately is to lead to a build-out that no longer requires us to engage in those type contracts. i'm not here to defend the track record of any company but i do believe there is a way we can responsibly do business and protect taxpayers and it does so in a way consistent with values and principles we have as a city. this is an opt-out program. if i had a choice, i don't know that i would do it that way, but at the end of the day the program is set out the way it is because of state law. that is something the puc will be explaining very shortly. so i look forward to a robust discussion. i know there are a number of issues raised in the last few days. those are issues we have thought about. we care about the impact of this program on lo

contamination that is a harm to the health and human safety of our individuals, and what precautions we as a city can take to ensure the health and safety of our residents and workers and to have discussion of potential sites which may even conclude in a relocation of organizations such as the boys and girls club that do serve our children and our families. second, i am introducing a set of ordinances to move forward with the implementation of the next space of south of market alley way improvement project, a beautification project the community has been tracking since the 6th street corridor improvement project was completed. phase one was completed last year and this included new street trees, textured asphalt paving. and the neighborhood residents have been incredibly appreciative of this noticeable change. based on lessons we've learned from phase one the city is working on a plan on the next phase, including enhancements of -- and clara between 5th and #th street. these alleys are the life blood of the community. so the alley ways are often used as routes for pedestrians and often play areas

people believe in it and the environmental challenges that come with that means that as a company, as a city and a country we have to work together to find the solutions to this. as we look into the future, we could say that the current model of the car industry needs to change. at the same time, we believe that individual mobility is what people desire. that does not mean -- that means they will use the car in a different way. here in san francisco, statistics are always something -- potentially, there are over 500,000 people looking for 450,000 parking spaces. this goes for most cities, about 30% of all of the traffic are people looking for parking places. imagine if you could take away some of that uncertainty, you could relieve a lot of the traffic that sits on our roads. with that, of course you reduce not only the congestion and the co2, you make the issue much more sustainable. we started to think about this over the last couple of years as to how we could provide some of the solutions. one thing that is for certain, there is no silver bullet. there is no one thing that a company or c

know the cultural benefit of not life on our city without entertaining and night life, it would be a completely different city. a lot of us might not like it as much. if you do not have that community building, that tool does not exist anymore. it is not just about that. it is about keeping this city diverse, and having young people that actually want to come here. i cannot tell you how many times i walk home up market street and see a line of young people waiting to get in to hear live music. even though i am an old fuddy- duddy now and i do not stay out as late as i used to, it is important to me to know that young people have things to do today. audrey asked the economic question of me almost immediately after taking office. it benefits us the truth about $55 million in tax revenue. nightlife is the only significant industry in this city that sometimes gets treated at times as it is a nuisance, a problem to be managed. and of course, we have to focus on making sure it is safe and that people are complying with the laws and that we are not having shooting. but when you get so focused on combating the negatives -- every industry has the nega

versus what we were before when there was sort of a redevelopment type distinction, it operated as a quasi city type entity but it wasn't a city department. once that dissolved, the liability became different because we accepted in essence the responsibility, we became the successor agency, the city became the successor agency but prior to the redevelopment agency going away, tida had always had its own funding from the operations so from leasing buildings to private entities or from having, you know, housing structures that generated income, they used that income to pay for city services like police and fire services, and so they never had tax increments or redevelopment tax increment dollars to go and fund their operation, it was always paid for by those leases and those incomes that are generated from these subleases. >> yes. >> so there's not any of that so now we transferred over where the redevelopment agency no longer exists and tida doesn't have this separate legal type of a distinction, it still is generating the same lease income, the same revenue that it was before and that is still
