our office reported last year that sugary drinks cost us as a city fifty million as a city $50 million and the city governments 26 $26 million a year so there's a negative compact by the over consumption of sugary beverages and we're continuing this fight against big soda in 2015 with our coalition with legislation that we think will make our communities healthier and better informed informed. the legislation i'm introducing will prohibit the use of city funds from city departments and contractors from purchasing sugary drinks it doesn't ban vendors or private parties from bringing them but it limits the city and departments and contractors that do business with the city to consume sugary beverages we can't in good faith know the terrible harm these drinks cause and then allow them to be handed out in children's programs or encourage employees to drink them and to provide the department of public health and our staff more information about the sale of these harmful products. lastly i'm introducing a resolution to formally endorse senator bill madding's bill as we voted about a year ago

and in the first 3 months of this year we as a city have already lost 15 lives. as evidenced by this activity what we're hearing from communities of color in the city as well as the budget analyst's report reflects the fact that our current public safety system isn't addressing all of the needs for the entire city of san francisco and crime is up more than 30 percent and impacting many of these areas besides the south eastern neighborhoods and i believe we need a serious overhaul on prevention efforts and we need to invest in programs in our city so that we're producing thoughtful results and this is not to say that that i don't support the nonprofit workers, it's quite the contrary i am open to it. i'm just unfortunately not able to support it at this time and being mindful that every allocation that we make is less funding that we have to balance our budget in support of other priorities and a lot of changes in the last 7 months since we took action on on that resolution and one area i think many of us are in agreement is a permanent fix is warranted for this pa

one of the things that is important to me as a city san franciscan and as a commissioner is the amount of business that is going to local people. i have said this before and i will say it again. i think a lot of people in the community have had to put up with a lot whether it was neglect by the city for many years or a lot of the construction and in some cases there is a lot of displacement like we find in the mission. it's important that local businesses that you hire people that have been around here for a long time. there is people that have been here since last year and are getting all the business where people that have been here are not getting any of the business. i know there is a percentage, but it would be great to get a little bioon some of these services to know it's given to people who have put up with. i have brought this up and will continue to bring it up and hold people accountable because it is important. i even mentioned last time that you know, the construction workers, you know, instead of hiring a caterer to come in, why don't you have one of the local dell is on

council see this is as very important priority but the long and short of what we're talking about today we have a resolution that would put san francisco on the record as the first city to come out in full support of the gerawan farm workers who have been fighting for the rights for a number of decades now. in 1990 farm workers at gerawan farming voting for representation by the united farm workers and was a state conducted secret ballot election. the labor relations board at this point certified the united farm workers as the farm workers union representative for those workers and for almost a quarter of a century this company -- gerawan, has been fighting the effort of these workers to simply exercise their rights. they have pulling all the stops to prevent implementation of the union contract. in fact things gotten so bad that the united farm workers invoked california's mandatory mediation law in a state appointed mediator was actually imposed, and that mediator issued a three year contract which included retroactive wage increases, holiday compensation that was supposed to take immediate effect to protect those workers. this happened again in 2013. it is now 201
