our zain asher joining me now from the new york stock exchange. she has been following the story for days now. this is a bit of an about face. >> hi, it does look like it. target now coming out saying that pin data was stolen but they are emphasizing the pin dat data was encrypted and don't believe they can unscramble the pin data. target told us yesterday something slightly different. part of their statement yesterday they said to date, there is no evidence that unencrypted pin data was compromised. i mean it's not necessarily a lie burks they certainly did omit the truth. there was definitely some corporate spin announcing that in fact, encrypted pin data was stolen, this he don't necessarily believe the hackers will be able to unscramble that data. i've been speaking to a professional what's known as a white hat hacker who, would with corporations to help their encryption systems. i asked him, should consumers worried? these hackers got away with the pin data albeit scrambled. should people be worried? he's saying to me the hackers in this case

zain asher with us now.o be a little bit more nervous if we were among it the 408 million pin numbers were breached? >> hi, fredricka. yes and no. so target just coming out now saying that pin data was in fact stolen. here's what you have to remember. they're saying even though pin data was stolen, they believe it is still safe and secure because they don't believe the hackers were able to decrypt the data. they don't store the key anywhere. so i guess imagine it like this. imagine that hackers were actually able to steal pin data but not actually able to encrypt the pins. so what that means is, an analogy i'm going to use is if thieves steal a safe way bunch of money in it but they don't have the combination code, then they don't get access to the money in that safe. the hackers did steal the pins, 40 million pins i guess but they're not actually able to decrypt those pins. it is looking a little bit better for target and consumers. the pins were stolen, but it's unlikely the thieves will be able to unscram

zane asher is at the new york stock exchange with the details. zane, why is this report suspicious? i know as a frequent flyer, that they've been padding these times, these start times, these departure times and arrival times. does that have thing to do with this. >> why he, unfortunately, that is exactly right. so even though the data shows that flight delays have improved, if you will, from between 2,000 and 2012 down by about 33%, you have to take the fact that only 76% of airlines are included in this report and the fact it's only 16 of the largest carriers. second of all, there is some padding going on. most airlines push back their scheduled arrival times so if there are delays you don't notice it. on paper durations are getting longer so even if the flight is delayed it still ends up arriving on time. the delta flight from between detroit and lagaraguardia allot itself two hours. in reality the flight should take closer to 1 hour and 15 minutes. the airlines have to be realistic. you have to take into consideration crowded runways and weather and that end coo of thing. the d.

cnn business correspondent zain asher joins us live from the new york stock exchange with more. zain, why does it always seem like investors end up on santa's nice list this time of year? >> i know. december is traditionally a very good month for stocks but yes, this is the 50th record close that we've had so far this year. not necessarily a surprise, especially given the rally that we've seen in the last six trading days. one thing to note, though, is that volume was certainly light today, given that it was the day after christmas. roughly around 230 million shares traded. it does sound like a huge amount but it's actually not that much in trading terms. so it means it's easier for traders to kick the market around. in terms of headwinds, the only headwinds that i can see right now, having spoken to traders, is in january. that's when earnings season begins and then the retailers have sort of suffered very disappointing earnings or sales, i should say, this holiday season, up by more than 2.3% compared to last year but only because of the discounts offered which might affect pr

zain asher at the new york stock exchange for us.e talking gdp and that is up, why isn't the stock market mirroring that? >> well, what might seem like good news to you and i is certainly not good news to traders on the floor. yes, gdp coming in pretty strong, 3.6%. certainly the best reading we had since the first quarter of 2012 when it came in at 3.7%. the problem is when you have good, strong economic numbers like that, people sort of start to begin to have a meaningful conversation about tapering, about the possibility of tapering happening sooner than expected, especially when the strong data is in line with other pieces of strong data we have gotten this week. jobless claims down by 23,000. also new home sales as well, good car sales, good strong numbers from the auto industry as well. but also, even though december is traditionally a good month in terms of rallying and stocks, we had a very good rally this year and now it's time for profit taking when you talk to traders downstairs. >> zain asher, thank you. >>> coming up, a

zain asher joining me on this story. this is scary, if you think you might be vulnerable here. we knew that 40 million customers could be vulnerable but this takes it to a new level of true, right. >> reporter: absolutely. according to a reuters report. about does, if it's true, it does open a whole, new can of worms. a thief gets access to your atm pin number, it means they can go directly into your account and steal money. it goes beyond using your credit or debit card details to go shopping. a debit card pin is more valuable to a hacker for several reasons. first of all, less of a chance that the transaction's going to be denied. if you go to bank or atm, you type in a pin, the banking institution assumes you must be who you say you are, and that's valuable to hackers. but also, just beyond withdrawing money from atm, they can see how much money you have in your account, they can check your balance, which allows them to determine how much they can steal from you and potentially get away with. i want to say, we did get a statement from target, denying pins may have been compr

let's go to zain asher who is on wall street.ood jobs news sometimes means taper news might be coming. i don't know if that's the case today. how are the markets doing? >> reporter: the market is liking what this job report means in terms of what it represents. it's clear that if you want to get in on this economic recover and, i guess, profit from it, the place to be is really stocks. the dow up by about 120 points. but what the market liked about this job report, was really the unemployment rate. that was the key surprise. down to 7%. the fed has said they want to see an unemployment rate as low as 6.5%. we're probably going to be seeing tapering at some point soon. long-term investors are certainly buying in at this level. but we do know that tapering is probably an inhe have that ability coming up in the next few months. what traders are saying is that at these levels we're seeing low volume as well, which can mean volatility. so the big question is can the market sustain this bull run. what's going to happen when the market

. >> google has now been ordered to pay a fine of more than $1 million, want to bring in zain asher toain, honestly, that's kind of a drop in the bucket for google, right? like $1 million. is there a message here? what's lined this? >> essentially spain is basically saying that they will not tolerate what they consider to be privacy violations. here's the problem. there are three reasons for the penalty. they're saying google gathers data on users. they're saying they sort of combine users' personal information across various online services that google has. and number three, they keep the data indefinitely. that's also a problem because spain says people have no idea how long their personal information is being kept for this all started when google changed their privacy policy last year. google does have a response. i'm going to read it to you. they're saying we continue -- "we continue to engage fully with the spanish protection agency to explain our privacy policy and how it allows us to create six pler and more effective services." not exactly apology but there you have it. >> blac

with me now, cnn legal analyst, former federal prosecutor, sunny hostin, and zain asher.hat other groups of people are these datda brokers selling their information? >> brooke, the lists are hugely troubling. it's not just lists of rape victims as you mentioned, but lists of seniors suffering from dementia, lists of people suffering from aids. police officers' home addresses, that kind of thing. as she mentioned, the data brokers take the lists, sell it to marketers for a few cents per name, but still a $150 billion industry, so there is clearly money to be made. also in terms of how they get access to the data. you think about it. everybody has an online presence to some degree. when you take an online survey to get a discount, that's one way. loyalty cards, warranty programs, shopping online, buying over th koune counter prescriptions. the most important thing is you have to be very careful and sort of, when you subscribe to anything online, make sure you read the fine print. that's crucial. a lot of people don't do it. >> how does this industry explain this? how do the

for more now, we go to zain asher at the new york stock exchange.ting that target was saying, oh, not to worry. your pin was not stolen. now we have the complete opposite that we're telling folks today. what the heck is going on? >> hi, kyra. you know, target basically is in full-scale damage control mode right now. they're sort of walking this tightrope between having to tell the public the truth and trying to prevent a full-scale panic. yes, they're now coming out and saying pin data was in fact compromised but it was encrypted and they don't believe these hackers will be able to unscramble that data. let me give you an analogy. imagine thieves stealing a safe with your life savings in it but not having the combination code. that's what we're dealing with right now. the hackers did steal pin data, but target does not believe they'll be able to unscramble the data. it's very different from what we heard from them-year-o yesterda. we reached out to them yesterday and asked what the deal was with pins. here's what they told us. they said to us yester

zain asher in new york. we're talking about it because we see the video and hear the think. fedexsaying? >> it wouldn't surprise you to hear the worker has since been fired. he does not have a job anymore. fedex said he wasn't playing by the rules. you can hear the think from about 20 feet away. what is worrying is this season u.p.s. and fedex haven't especially won the popularity contest, but the package contained doll clothes. but i don't think it matters what was in the package. i think it's a matter of principle. you don't simply throw something at someone's house like that. this is not the first time this has happened. take a look at another video we have of a delivery worker in china. basically throwing packages onto a conveyer belt. >> ah, yes. where he's missing the conveyer belt. >> it lands on the ground, so this happens more often than we would like -- >> pay attention, do this gingerly. we mentioned packages being delivered on time. i know fedex and u.p.s. had a rough christmas week. a lot of packages not making it on time at all. what's the fallout there? >> a l

zane asher is in new york with what it means and how it all happened. >> reporter: fredricka, it was week for the economy. car sales rose, new-home sales roared and the unemployment rate dropped to 7%, the lowest since 2008. and it fell for positive reasons, because people are finding work. earlier this year, the unemployment rate declined because a lot of people got discouraged, gave up looking for work and weren't counted, but the opposite seems to be happening. it's added more jobs since 2005 and the gains are not in low-wage sectors. a lot of hiring in health care, transportation, professional services like accountants and travel agents. wages are also up and americans are working more hours. the list goes on. the report pushed the dow up nearly 200 points friday. wall street is thinking the federal reserve will reduce the stimulus program soon. certainly a sign the economy is ready to stand on its own two feet. but remember, we still haven't gained back all of the jobs we lost during the recession. more than 1 million to go. so, fredricka, there is still a lot of work to be done

zain asher are joining me now to talk about this. because this isn't perhaps just an act of generosity, right, zain? you look at this and you wonder if maybe it wasn't a jab at say target or amazon. >> you know, brianna, it is absolutely from where i'm standing it is absolutely a jab at target. it does look like this. target i wonder now if they have any regrets. their argument is they didn't want to stock an album already already available exclusively on itunes. if i was a retailer i think beyonce is the last person i would ever want to make an enemy of. there are two winners first of all walmart, great publicity for them. one of the biggest stars in the world essentially encouraging people to shop at your store. i wonder how many people used that gift card to buy her album and also obviously, apple doing very well. if target and amazon don't stock beyonce's album, that means more downloads on itunes. apple has said this is the fastest selling album ever, 800,000 download in the first three days. i think target may have shot themsel

zain asher is following the story for us from new york.e reaction to this dramatic announcement. a woman now leading gm. >> wolf, the reaction has been very interesting indeed. i've been speaking to industry analysts all morning. obviously a lot of them praising and an plaugd gm for a decision that is progressive and symbolic at the same time. but some people are saying they cannot wait to see a world where gm or any sort of car manufacturer hiring a woman has ceo is the a common occurrence and not necessarily "headline news." they think she should honestly be judged on her contribution, her achievements and not necessarilher gender. you cannot get away from the fact that is traditionally a male oriented company. they have been making progress in their industry. back in 1993, 15% of car manufacturer employees were women. right now it's 21%. certainly a lot of progress indeed, wolf. >> good for her and good for gm. a woman now about to lead general motors. so on another issue, how important is this announcement made by the obama administrat

zain asher is joining us to talk about the latest version of this because this came about first became popular when you had the actor, the french actor gerard day poor due says i don't want to pay this. i'm becoming a russian citizen instead. initially, it was very different, right? 75% tax on income that was over 1 million euros or $1.4 million a year. that's not what we're talking about. >> yeah, so that was the original plan. the original plan was like 75% tax on millionaires. that was ruled illegal. so basically francoise hollande has a way to circumvent that. he's now going to betachs businesses that pay workers are 1 million euros or $1.4 million 75%. here's a couple things you have to understand. first of all, the tax is only temporary for wages earned in the year 2013 and 2014. i've been speaking to european economists one of which tells me he anticipates that french companies are going to start striking deals with their high income workers to defer some of their wages about i a couple of years as a way to get around the tax. you have to understand there is some protections for

zain asher joining us from the new york stock exchange. start with the key economic report that came out today. how much growth are we talking about? >> reporter: third quarter gdp coming in at 3.6%. certainly a good headline number and the biggest growth we've seen since the first quarter of 2012. part of the reason for this is seeing a bigger boost in inventories, bigger buildup in inventorie inventories. you'll see consumer spending is weak. but if you remove inventories from the data, gdp third quarter actually would have come in at 1.9%. not necessarily that impressive. how far, the headline number's getting stronger. if you compare it to what we've seen this year, the first three months of the year, 1.1%, last quarter 2.5%, and also this number is certainly in line with stronger economic reports we've seen just this week from the car industry, and also housing and jobless claims as well. >> very encouraging. but stocks not necessarily all that -- down 25 points now, right? explain why investors are a bit nervous though there has been

i want to go straight to zain asher. explain the significance of this sale. it's all gone?the treasury department just announcing that it's selling the remaining shares it has in g.m. remember just a bit of background, g.m. actually got about $50 billion from the government during the financial crisis. that money was actually converted into equity. the government did also bail out chrysler, too. but the government actually owned more than 60% of g.m. it's been slowly selling those shares, winding down as the stock price recovers. the taxpayers' current state was 2%. that's about 70 million shares. obviously the higher g.m. stock price goes, the more taxpayers will make back. but likely we won't be breaking even. g.m.'s shares have to surge upwards of roughly $300 for that to happen. g.m. actually closed the day at $40 a share so there is a loss. by getting out now, the government can officially takes its hands out of g.m. as you remember, its involvement was highly controversial back in 2009. obviously a lot of people were saying it's not the government's place to bail out

today, the company is giving new details about the investigation and cnn business correspondent zain ashers here to catch us up on that. what's going on? >> well, there was a reuters report that the hackers who compromised those 40 million debit and credit cards may have actually gotten access to people's pin numbers as well. now, target for their part has come out denying this. they sent us a statement today saying, i'm quoting, there is no evidence that unencrypted pin data was compromised. we have no idea at this point. it's obviously very early in the investigation. we're not sure what's true and what's not true. but i will say that if it is true, if people's pin numbers were compromised as well, it does open a whole new can of worms, because it means that these hackers can actually go to the atm and withdraw money directly from people's bank accounts. it also means they can check your balance as well and figure out how much money is at their disposal, too. obviously, target coming out once again denying this, but i will say that if you did shop at target between the end of november an

apple now has access to more than 700 million cell phone customers. 700 million, zain asher. to be this massive, massive deal here with china and apple. >> reporter: absolutely. think about that, 700 million, twice the population of the united states, four times the number of users that at & t and verizon has combined. apple is basically expanding their client base without even having to come up with a new product. imagine that. here's why china is important. first of all, it's the world's second largest economy. also, they have a rapidly growing middle class, great news for apple, and the world's largest internet base as well. for apple, their growth rate in the u.s. has been slowing because when you buy an iphone you typically keep it for several years before you get a new one so they have been needing new territory. obviously china does give them that. one headwind they do have is how to price the iphone in china. smartphones in china cost roughly around $100. the iphone 5c which is the cheaper one, costs about $700. they'll have to figure that out. but wall street definit
