. >> reporter: it is a very sparsely populated part of virginia, where 22-year-old ross ashley grew up. neighbors and one educator confirmed the young man accused of gunning down a virginia tech police officer attended post oak middle school and played football here at the high school. one classmate said she barely remembered the young man in part because he was so quiet. billy joe worked in the middle school cafeteria when ross ashley was a student there. >> you could tell he was not out going, and a group of them hung around and they got in a little bit of mischief, stuff like that, but not anything that would indicate this would take place. >> what kind of mischief? >> um, in trouble with the law, um, taking things. >> as an adult ross ashley apparently had no published criminal history other than a speeding violation in rad ford where he was attending college part-time he served in the student government and made the deans list according to the collegiate times at ch. ap quotes a neighbor of his in rad ford saying he recently shaved his head he stole a mercedes suv at gun point wed

state police cannot find a link between ross ashley and the campus police officer that he killed. police say ashley bought the gun that he used in that shooting at a licensed virginia gun dealer. there are also no known connections to virginia tech. surveillance video first puts ashley in blacks burg on wednesday afternoon but he is not seen again until the shooting that killed deriek crouse. >>> former penn state assistant football coach jerry sandusky won't have to return to court until march. no plea deal has been reached tonight but the defense says that prosecutors promise not to raise bail and to quickly share any discovery information. the alleged victims will now have more time to prepare their testimony for trial. but some were frustrated with the late decision. sandusky himself spoke outside the court about today's developments. >> to put together the best possible defense that we can do. to stay the course to fight for four quarters. we'll have the opportunity to present our side. >> sandusky is charged with 52 counts of sexual abuse with 10 boys over a 12 year span. >>

this happened at 11:20, when rosh ashley walked into the gilbert real estate office.to see bennett, although she says they had never met. bennett walked in and tried to shut the door. he was wearing a black cap, black fleece jacket and had a dark green jacket. >> was very calm. talking just like you and i are right now. he wasn't any different than any other kid that comes in here who wants to talk about something. >> reporter: ashley had rented a apartment. bennett says they had no problem with ashley, until he demanded her keys at gunpoint. >> a car is compared -- nothing compared to what could have happened. he didn't have gloves on, he didn't have a mask on. >> reporter: on thursday, she was on her way over to pick up the car when she got a call from investigators, asking her to come to the virginia tech campus, to look at a picture. >> bennett says there was -- it was a picture of ashley's deceased body. >> no question in your mind that was him? >> no question at all. >> reporter: bennett and her assistant manager believe they may never know why ashley targeted t

the gunman, 22-year-old ross ashley later killed himself. a real estate manager says the day before the shooting ashley walked into her office and pulled a gun and stole her suv. police don't know why he did that either. he was a part-time college student at radford with no known connections to virginia tech. ashley's family is offering their condolences and prayers to officer deriek crouse's family. he was remembered as a man you couldn't help but love. julie carey reports. >> reporter: with virginia tech police on one side and army buddies on the other his widow, son and four stepsons watched tearfully but all around them were hundreds of officers there to show support. >> just to show our support from all the difficult agencies and how close we are as a family in law enforcement. . i mean it hurts for all of us. >> reporter: in the parking lot outside the coliseum is the spot where he was ambushed last week. a student from radford later turned the weapon on himself. crouse's flag-draped coffin was at the center of a crowd of thousands. th
