ashley: please.r the last three months alone we spent something like $17 billion, monday we racked up over and above the money the government is making and what could have done with that? you could have bought and built tent space shuttles. or you could have bought the tom sullivan. all of them, most valuable sports franchises including the yankees. just to give you an idea, this is just this summer alone. we made a comparison recently on our show. four years ago in august 2008 the national debt stood at 96 trillion. this hill it goes up so far so fast. it's like your credit card. you get a little debt. 66 percent higher. 6 trillion additional dollars down the drain. so easy to write it up. so tough to bring it down. even the ryan plan, which was so aggressive. it just lowering the rate of the increase. it doesn't actually cut that number. gerri: your share of this, $50,000. pony up. we need some more doe for the federal government. ashley: per person. lori: that's more than most of us make a year. t

ashley: in what way? >> i can remember just anecdotally, when we went to the mall we had to stop at coach. we now just walk right by. michael coors is eating their lunch. a lot of stores are eating their lunch. they started the company in 1941. so you have to reinvent yourself time after time. earnings have not been that great although consensus expectations seemed to have settled. what i will say, they're growing big. japan has 187 stores from 155. china, the 6 stores, triple what they had a few years ago. they're growing around the country but they have to figure it out. ashley: decent debt levels. looking at analyst notes. they have revenue growth, net income growth. no major weaknesses other than just trying to perhaps freshen their appearance? >> that's the pitfall of retail in general. you see it a lot more with teen retail because it seems that is more fickle. certainly when these aspirational brands sort of fade, this is where you go when you make the move to the next level. you have a coach and l

ashley: uh-huh. stopwatch.controversial federal program designed to help owners pay down their mortgages may be hurting taxpayers. ashley: william la jeunesse with the details on this story. >> reporter: contrary to what voters were told, one state has now taken the unprecedented step of giving banks and struggling homeowners up to $100,000 to help reduce the underwater mortgage problem. we're talking about $8 billion in federal money. now, originally banks were supposed to absorb 50% of the cost of reducing the principal of those where homes were worth less than the actual mortgages. homeowners had to pay the money back when the home was sold, and, three, taxpayers would then pay the other half. well, when the banks refused to write down even a penny of these underwater mortgages, california has now decided to pay the entire amount, 100%, and reduce or rather, basically, release homeowners from their obligation. so now taxpayers are wholly responsible for the financial obligations of this housing crisis. >> th
