i'm dan ashley. >> and i'm carolyn johnson. this happened on foothill boulevard and grove way in hayward and that's where abc7 news reporter alan wang is right now. alan? >> yeah, we are at the summer wood apartments. it is actually at the 21000 block of foothill boulevard. the crime scene is in the back of this apartment complex and that's where police were told to conduct a welfare check on a woman tonight around 7:00 p.m. they went to the woman's second-story apartment and for some reason, and we are trying to get this confirmed by police, the officer ended up shooting her. we are told the woman may have been armed, but police have not been able to confirm this. neighbors say they heard a woman yelling and they saw a hayward police officer take cover behind the car and fire at least four to five shots. she tumbled halfway down the stairs and more neighbors saw her lying on the staircase screaming. >> it was about five shots. it scared me to death. i felt like i could feel them. it was so close. i think i said my safety -- my

i'm dan ashley. carolyn johnson is off tonight. abc7 news reporter alan wang is live at sf general with details. take us through what happened. >> here tonight we can see police presence here, but not specifically for the attack on the elderly woman which happened here on friday night around 10:00. police officers are actually posted here on a regular basis. in fact, just tonight we saw them dealing with a man who appeared to have been involved in some kind of disruption in the er, and we saw them bringing out another manppened happened cuffs -- handcuffs. the attack on an elderly woman is the first time anything like this has happened. the officer told me the suspect who we now know was being transferred from the emergency room to the psych psyr for evaluation. that's when he off the jumped off the gear knee and -- gurney and randomly attacked a woman being treated and immediately pulled off and restrained by sheriff deputies nearby. the woman suffered some bruises, but she did not have to be hospitalized for the attack. in a stat
