ashley bennett drove republican john carman out of office because he insulted her and the millions ofmericans who joined the women's march all over the country. and joining us now for exclusive interview is ashley ben ned. ashley, tell us about that moment when you decided to do this. >> hi, lawrence. thank you so much for having me. well, that moment was just a moment of pure shock. i just couldn't believe that in 2017 we were actually seeing this. and i went to the freeholder meeting after writing him a letter. i didn't get a response and i waited to see what kind of response he was going to give and as you just showed in the clip that was the response. and i took off of work. i used vacation time to go to that meeting and i felt like it was a waste. and so i walked out. and for all the people who felt like their voice wasn't heard, i said i'll run and be your voice. >> did it you say it that day walking out of the meeting, i will run? >> i went home and i said to my family how upset i was and they said, why don't you run? and i said, well, i will run. >> and how did you find the ti

he lost his seat last night to a democratic woman, ashley bennett. 32 years old, never run for office before, but found something inspiring in the way this year has gone in america and presumably something inspiring in the character of her local officials, one of whom she's retired and hopefully he may learn to feed himself. poor soul. biggest loss of the night for republicans was lost governor's race in virginia, ralph northam beating republican ed gillespie easily. yeah it means a democrat is succeeding a democrat as governor of virginia, but when terry mccall won in virginia, won loudoun county and prince william county by single digits. ralph northam won them by more than 20 points. nine points overall, more than any democratic governor has won in a generation. polls said it was toss-up. last night was anybody's guess. when the polls are that wrong, say it's going to be tie and democrat wins by nine points, the way polls are usually wrong is that they miss turnout because they miss enthusiasm. i don't know if democratic enthusiasm was motivated by northam being at top of the ticke

joining us on the phone is ashley bennett. congratulations. >> hi, how are you. h. >> thank you for joining us. and, ashley, as you remember back to that moment, and the way i read it was a friend of yours forwarded a post by carmen that basically said women should be in the kitchen. >> well, the party had sent out an email, and she saw it first, and i was doing school work. and she told me to check my email. and i said why? and she said, girl, check it and call me back. so that's what i did. and what i saw it i was very disappointed and dis heart end and i wrote him a letter and didn't get a response. and i guess he'll respond now. >> you do have a response. you won by 1,000 votes or so out of 14,000 votes. you did quite well. and as a first time politician, a lot of folks are probably saying you should pat yourself on the back. what do you think this says about the electorate? >> i think it says that people want change. and we are fighting for our current future as well as the future of generations to come. and that future includes respect, tolerance, inclusion,

ashley bennett is joining us by skype in atlantic city.on the move in atlantic city. jennifer, let me start with you. how are the boys? >> the boys are doing well. one is at home and we're waiting for the released from the hospital soon. >> at the time you didn't know you were pregnant. you discover you're pregnant, you're having twins and you're running this improbable campaign. what inspired you to get into politics for the first time? >> absolutely. so i think it really started with the election from last year. i just remember these feelings of fear and anxiety of helplessness and hopelessness. i knew there needed to be a counterbalance, there needed to be a response to trump politics because he was inserting so much mysogeny and bigotry. there is a democratic option which is the best option. >> in fact, the house of delegates had been dominated by basically white male republicans for generations, and this is a very different, much more diverse electoral victory, not just you but some of the others that were elected in virginia. >> yes,

. >> well, let's talk about that, david, because that woman's name is ashley bennett, and she was partsomething else we saw. more minorities, more diversity on the democratic side. balvir singh, freeholder in new jersey, sheila oliver in new jersey, as well. but what was interesting is, you know, the democrats get slammed for identity politics. they didn't really talk about the identity politics. they stuck to the issues. is that a message in general what we see democrats doing here? do something different. don't do what democrats have already done. >> i think you have to give credit where credit is due, particularly in the collar counties. democrats out-organized republicans. you have an uphill battle, kind of splicing between the trump loyalists and those collar county republicans who tend to kind of not align so much with president trump's rhetoric. at the same time, yes, diversity was important this cycle. you saw folks particularly in new jersey from different backgrounds retire office. i like to highlight the mayor in hoboken, who was also a sikh. and, you know, you don't think o
