brian: joining us now is iowa congresswoman ashley hinson.ongresswoman, thank you for being here tonight. you were in the room last night for the president's speech. as somebody watching on the other side of the screen, the view, panoramic view of that room was awfully discouraging to me. the distancing, masks in a room full of people fully vaccinated. your reaction to being in that room. how did it feel to you? >> absolutely, brian, thanks for having me on tonight. members of congress were given priority access to the vaccine so we could be in the capitol to do the work people pay us to do. i'm encouraged to get back to work as normal as possible, as soon as possible. unfortunately last night we saw caving to the fear, continuing to cave to the fear. we need to be safe, we need to be reasonable and follow the cdc guidelines which say if you have been vaccinated congregated in a room. i was discouraged by that, the state of the union where joint sessions of congress are supposed to be gathering with a full chamber, many guests, full cabinet,

jon: congresswoman ashley hinson from iowa, thank you. >> thanks, jon. ♪ jon: a long island, new yorker is in critical condition after a late night traffic stop. it happened last night in suffolk county. police say the uniformed officer tried to pull over a car driving with no lights on when it hit another car. the driver then got out and stabbed him in the leg, hitting an artery in the process. the former marine living nearby joined officers to help the injured officer. >> i said what's the matter with you. he said i was stabbed in the leg. i said, do you need a tourniquet? yes. i went upstairses, grabbed a belt. after the tourniquet was applied, one of the cops said let's get him to the car, so i grabbed the legs. i put his leg on my shoulders and two other cops grabbed the back of the officer, and we put him in a police suh. jon: the suspect is now charged with aggravated assault, driving while intoxicated and resisting arrest. >>> we're learning some of the details on the funeral of prince philip as the united kingdom continues to mourn the loss of the longest serving consort in b

there will be first-timers, like ashley hinson, representing iowa's first congressional district. it's her first term. she noted on twitter she will be attending the joint address on wednesday. she says she hopes he will lay out actual solutions to the many challenges facing iowa families, farmers, and small businesses right now. there will also be veterans of the congress in attendance, including eleanor horton. >> mary kate kerry is the professor at the university of virginia, also a former speechwriter for president george h w bush. we spoke with her about authoring a presidential address and what the goals of such a speech are. >> president biden will be more focused on what his future goals are than anything that's been accomplished so far. the usual decision that has to be made is, should it start with foreign policy and go to domestic, or start to domestic and go to foreign? that completely depends on the strength of the arguments and the priorities they've got. it changes from year to year which one goes first. generally you start with the weakest and go to the strongest.

clear, we have this to democrats ore even saying what are you doing democrat iowa representative ashley hinsonot to go there the congress has to kick the stand for far too long, they sit there in d.c. and criticize border authority, they criticize people at the border trying to do the right thing but then they don't go there, they are a-wall, your reaction to that. >> you are right about the one key factor without the biden administration authorizing federal funding forho our guardsmen we can only be in support of our county sheriff's and other local law enforcement who are doing great we can provide resources to local community but the real need is the custom border patrol to the i.c.e. agents into her immigration services all threent of which we have served over the past three administrations and if we don't get the authorization for president biden we will not be able too so this problem down in the communities will be less safe on both sides ofco the border on mexico and in arizona. liz: we hear you loud and clear but the white house press secretary jen psaki failed to say if biden reverse

i know that with ashley hinson and marinet miller-meeks in the house they will continue to push and we will take the house back in 2022 as well.
