ashley morrison reports there are now fitness classes specifically for cancer survivors. >> reporter: breast cancer survivor zilma soto has been coming to this exercise class for two years. >> i couldn't even move my arm up from the surgery. >> reporter: she signed up for the specialized class, which helps women healing from breast cancer. the instructors are geared to the patient's needs. so they know that they have had lymph node surgery or they have had other types of surgery. >> reporter: the american college of sports medicine has issued new guidelines that urge cancer survivors to try to get the same amount of exercise as the average person, about 2 1/2 hours a week. studies show staying active improvements quality of life and helps cancer related fatigue and counter acts some chemo drug side effects. >> a lot of women who have breast cancer especially when they're post-menopausal, are on drugs that decrease their bone density. so the exercise really helps. >> reporter: exercising regularly also keeps off excess weight which research shows cuts down on your chance of recurrence.
