. >>> for more on why the greek crisis means so much to the economy here at home, ashley morrison from cbs "moneywatch" joins us in new york. good morning, ashley. explain to us how this ripple effect works. >> reporter: good morning to you, betty. it may seem it's happening a long way away but the european crisis is the single biggest threat to our economy. if greece and europe cannot agree on a solution, we may well be dragged back into a recession. europe is, by far, our biggest trading partner and a default in greece or anywhere else in the eu could send shock waves through the american banking system, and that includes i.r.a.s, and almost everything. the congressional research surface estimates that u.s. bank exposure at $640 billion. that is nearly 5% of total u.s. banking assets. and american banks also have more than a trillion dollars in loans with german and french banks, which are the biggest lenders to those troubled european economies. it could shut down the financial global system so a lot is riding on this, betty. >> no doubt. ashley morrison in new york, thank you. >>>

we go to ashley morrison from "cbs moneywatch" with more. good morning. >> good morning to you, terrell. well, the numbers are bad on wall street and overseas. it's definitely getting worse. asian markets went into a freefall today. japan's nikkei lost 3% while hong kong's hang seng dropped more than 5%. european markets have also opened on the downside. >>> italy has become the biggest concern due to their terrible finances. the country's borrowing costs soared to a record high. prime minister berlusconi is trying to pass reforms to pull the economy back from the brink but he lost virtually his support and has now promised to resign. a big bailout may be out of the question. the italian economy is just too big. europe's third largest. with a debt of $2.6 trillion. there simply isn't enough money to put together a rescue package. >>> meanwhile, the situation in greece is nowhere near settled. negotiations to put together a coalition government have turned into chaos. until they get that done, they will not get the rescue package put together

ashley morrison is here in new york with more on that. she's not very quiet and that is a good thing. >> reporter: never. asian markets were pretty quiet today. tokyo's nikkei average was up slightly while hong kong's hang sang fell less than 1%. today, wall street gets the latest read out on the housing market and the weekly jobless claim numbers. on wednesday, stocks took a nose dive on fears that the banks could take a hit from the debt crisis in europe. the dow spell 190 points. the nasdaq lost 46. don't look now, but oil prices are making a comeback, hovering above $102 a barrel today in asia and only time before it makes it to the gas pump and gas prices could hit record highs for thanksgiving weekend. a gallon of regular is expected to average $3.37 a gallon nationwide by next thursday. >>> more americans than ever are planning to work well into old age. according to a wells fargo survey, more than three-quarters of workers say they expect to still be at it beyond retirement age, with 1 in 4 expecting to be working at 80 years old.
