i do want to speak of the larger issue of war and asia, and why we should even be worried about asia. today i think we'll ultimately get there. just to begin here with my frame of -- some of you already know of what the japanese were up to during the war. this is one of the enterprises, the siberian intervention. we'll get there in a second. but it's not just the siberian intervention. so, okay. of course, this is the usual snb of the world war. it's often depicted this way. for obvious reasons, this makes sense. this is the main area of activity. but of course, it is not a european war. it is a world war. you can see that, of course, much better with this kind of map. i think this map is quite astonishing. basically you notice every country that you can think of on this map is involved in the war in some way. it's only a few sort of areas in latin america that remain sort of blank. other than that, it's really super global. you can talk about any one of these. i will, of course, only be focusing on the east asia part. for us americans, it's not difficult to think of this has a global

in asia stock markets are reacting to the missing air asia plane. the company stock tumbled after news the plane had vanished. how did the stock fair in monday trading? >> as you can expect after this what we believe could be a tragic accident the stock was under a lot of pressure. it closed down around 8.5% in asian trading. it's been a real out performer up to december 26th before this incident. it was around 34% for the year. air asia is owner of 49% of air asia indonesia which was the operator of this aircraft. highly rated stock as well. analysts had it as a byeuy rating before this incident. no fatalities. and an entrepreneur that has many plans for air asia is of course very very concerned at the fate of those crew and passengers. looking at the u.s. markets i'm taking a look over my shoulder after a very strong run up on the previous trading session on friday. we are slightly low and the dow down at 1%. the s&p futures trading 1% lower. this is coming off a very strong run for the u.s. markets in the last seven sessions the s&p put on 6% to

let's take a look at asia. asia reacting to what is happening on wall street. japanese stocks were rising earlier in the day. now, it is fractionally down but stocks have been rising for two days now. it will be the third consecutive day today if it rises within energy companies which is leading the gains after the crude prices rose and the yen weakened against the dollar. later, we do have more economic data out of japan as they released the monthly economic report in the afternoon. we will get economic data in south korea. it is not trading .1% higher. we have the finest ministry with the 2015 economic policy direction. they are expecting to cut the growth target rate which currently stands at 4%. australia is doing well. they are rising 1%. 1.2%. that is being led by energy shares. we can see the oil prices have been fluctuating greatly. we have seen after it rose -- its biggest rise in more than two years. this saudi arabia finance minister said it is confident that prices will rebound. let's take a look at what is happening with the japanese stocks. it is

southeast asia has seen five major crashes this year alone. these accidents ever occurred during a time of surging demand for air travel in the region since 2010 the number of passengers carried annually in the asia pacific region has jumped to 1 billion a 66% increase, that's more than europe and north america combined. according a the wall street journal, there aren't enough training programs in asia to produce enough qualified pilots to meet that demand. airlines have had to hire pilots from the u.s. and europe to if i am the gap. that has led to communication issues in the cockpit. the third problem is lower pay in asia for air traffic controllers, mechanics and regulators leading to lower safety standards. one more note about indonesian air travel, many of their airports lack wind shear detect equipment, probably not an issue in the airasia flight 8501 crash because it was at 30,000 feet and yet one more thing that makes indonesias air travel less safe. >> the rough weather suspected of playing a role in the downing of flight 8501 has als
