[applause] thank you for being part of the richness of who we are common here in san francisco. and i want to thank all of you who are the community leaders of this wonderful city that was founded as col down. we know we have had struggles over the decades and have accomplished many things. but i want to take a moment to say a quick thanks to those of you who are working to make sure that our asian american brothers and sisters, and grandparents who are still living in sro's, i want to thank you for the work you are doing for them. the work we are doing for asian- american brothers and sisters who still today may not have health insurance or child care. for young people who may not have access to the youth services they need. or to our grandparents who may not have access to the prescription drugs or senior services that they need. we have come a long way but we have a long way to go. i just want to thank you in this year of 2011 are coming together as a community for the work we have

i am speaking on behalf of the asian and pacific islander wellness center. we want to applaud the considerable work that the board and city have invested in preserving treatment intervention funding. we thank you for your effort, but i wanted to bring an issue to your attention and ask for your support as you track the evolution of the hiv epidemic in san francisco. the provincial plan signals a sea change in a chevy policy that resulted in the elimination of provincial resources for the asian and pacific islander committee. plan seeks to reduce san francisco's hiv epidemic for all ethnicities by 4% efforts on a caucasian, african- american, and latino men who have sex with men and transgendered women. today, asian-pacific islanders represent over 1/3 of san francisco's population, and yet, we only receive about 10% of all hiv tests administered by the city. despite the small number of tests, documented cases among asians and pacific islanders in san francisco have grown from 6% in 2006 to 10.3% in 2010. during the same time, the presentation decrease by 7%

i can go off and preach about the fact they think so many of us asian american authors and asian authors in general tend to go back and write about our ancestors and write about things in our past not our specific past but may be of of ancestors and mothers and grand mothers. we have been telling their story. i think the generation to come, will be telling stories of living here. it will be different stories. but the oppression of our voices have been for so many, many years, if you think back the first writer who was read in terms of asian american was maxine kingston. i read her in high school and was greatly affected by reading about the woman warrior. before her there were few. there were some but didn't make that economic splash. they were never read in a large way. maxine was the first one we read her in school we knew of her. she was not out there like anny tan was when she wrote the joy luck club. so much of it is timing. it meant all the history and the voices before then had been silent. my generation of writers came in and we heard stories of women and men and the family of a

that i have been watching the news lately and there has been a murder between a latino person and an asian person. they are using this person's tattoo. they have been advertising this on the news. they're using it to identify the person who was responsible. the police are interested in -- i am asking, can also the video that was gotten when my brother was murdered in the tenderloin, because a lot of it was caught on tape. i'm not sure how much was caught on tape. i have been told that the tape and the film as grainy. would like to know if we can use what we can of that video. they're saying they have a hard time to identify the suspects. can part of that video be used to, you know, help identify the suspect in my brother's murder? i would like to say for myself and my family, we are law abiding citizens of san francisco and of the state of california, you know, and the pledge of allegiance you all pledge, justice for all, we want justice according to the laws of san francisco. we don't want just as any other way. we will not a lot of our way to do anything and take justice in our own hands

on the asian children's book the five chinese brothers, a play called four chinks and a dike. there's also the dream of kitsumura which was inspired by a dream you had about your father. this play, way back, before it became this play was an adaptation of the 1954 play rashamon. how did you get from rashamon to this. >> the original idea was that i was going to do an adapt daition of rashamon. cary pearloff said you want to do a play for us, how about adapting rashamon. i said, sure. as is the case when i do this, sometimes i go in a straight line and sometimes i end up somewhere totally different. i've grown to accept it, that i'm going to follow the horse wherever it goes and hope that the theater is comfortable with it. so it started off as rashamon and i couldn't find an entree into it. for me, when i do an adaptation, i try to frame it in present day life context or contextualize it in another moment and bring that skeletal story line structure into it. and i couldn't make any headway. then a story that had been kind of floating around in my head kind of came to the fore,
