asian-americans, it's not just about asian-americans and not just for asian-americans. for one thing, my publisher wants to sell books, you know? and it's meant to talk about race more generally. many of the examples are about african-americans. and they're about african-americans because i realized -- i face prejudice. i face stereotypes. sometimes that's not recognized sometimes i -- i'm annoyed. and sometimes, in some instances, asian-americans can face serious hate crimes and bias. but by and large, what i face doesn't compare with what african-americans face. so i realized if i'm going to be serious about this work, civil rights work, i have to stand up and speak out not just when it's someone who happens to look like me but when it's others, when it's african-americans. their cause is my cause. if i only stood up when it was, say, the wen ho lee case, and said, "there's racial profiling," in that case, that wouldn't be standing up for principle. that would be standing up for self-interest. i have to stand up when it's "driving while black," when it's a different f

it's a community forum for asian-americans to talk about experiences with body images.id you come up with this name? >> my co-founder, lynn chen, is a very successful food blogger. one of the things that anybody who has founded any sort of ventures before will realize that coming up with a name and getting that address is the hardest part so she came up with a list of names that had to do with food and thick dumpling skin when it popped up, we just felt that it was the right thing. dumplings are something that's asian-american and it's also about what's on the inside that counts. so when i read it, i was like we have to go with this one, it works. >> i'm thinking body texture, you know. but okay, i love it. that's perfect. so tell me about the motive for doing all this, because obviously there was a need inside you and your friend. >> the interesting thing is that it started with me writing an article in a magazine, an asian-american publication that i was a part of. in sharing my own story, you know, having gone through this personal journey of perfection and what that

i learned everything i could about asians.in the process of coors, i was always trying to learn about this mystery at the core of the book. what i can tell you about the mystery without giving too much away is that it is very much alive and kicking. i met a very steep tokyo trial scholar in japan who remains convinced that okawa must have deceived the court because the timing of this insanity beyond such the recovery, the timing was too perfect. i met a very influential writer who believes that okawa must have deceived the court and probably did so intentionally to expose the hypocrisy of a wartime cryo- by the victorious nation. i told you about meeting the tojo's granddaughter. she remembers hearing a method to see the core, but she thinks this is part of a larger allied scheme to remove okawa before he can discuss imperialism in a negative light. now, these probably sound like conspiracy theories to some of you and you wouldn't be wrong. they certainly sound like that to me. what of that to suggest is there's a little more

and asians to asians and whites to whites? >> guest: good question. well, that is, in fact, the rationale for racial preferences in medical school, which is to say it's a little different than--from affirmative action--i mean, as racial preferences, not affirmative action. affirmative action i'm all in favor of, which is outreach. but as far as--that is the justification for racial preferences in medical school, that the only way we will close the so-called health gap--the fact, for example, that we have higher infant mortality rate in african-americans babies and higher death rates from higher incidence of diabetes and heart disease and so on, is if we have more african-american doctors, which is different from the rationales for racial preferences other places. there it's more principled. even though i personally don't agree with those principles, that they're the principles of compensating for a past injustice or for diversity for diversity's sake. but in medical schools, it's practical and one would think it could be empirically tested. but i trie
